Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat to be Special Timekeeper for AEW Dynamite

Tony Khan announced on Twitter that Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will serve as the special guest timekeeper for AEW Dynamite. This will be the first time in 28 years that Ricky Steamboat will be on TBS, with the last time being a no disqualification match against “Stunning” Steve Austin, for the WCW United States Championship at Clash of the Champions 28 in August of 1994, making his return almost 28 years later to the date.

While it isn’t official as of yet, it’s likely he will be officiating over the Bryan Danielson vs. Daniel Garcia, 2 Out of 3 Falls match, given the connection to his feud with Steve Austin in 1994. Austin declared himself the “Dragon Slayer” after defeating Steamboat at Bash at the Beach of that same year, much in the same way that Garcia has done after defeating Danielson on the July 27th edition of AEW Dynamite. The return also obviously functions as a tie-in for the “House of the Dragon” branding that this week’s Dynamite has been pushing.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat gets involved in the action in some manner. AEW has been good about paying homage to legends without hurting their ongoing stories too much so they can have the benefit of the doubt here.
