National Wrestling Alliance to Reintroduce NWA United States Tag Team Championship

The NWA United States Tag Team Titles Return

The National Wrestling Alliance announced that, at the company’s NWA 74 event set for August 27-28, the NWA United States Tag Team Championship will be reintroduced. Also previously known as the WCW United States Tag Team Championship, these titles were retired in July of 1992. The first titleholders since the championship’s return will be decided via a 10-team battle royal set for Night 2 of the aforementioned event. As of this writing, the teams set to compete have yet to be unveiled.

Billy Corgan, the owner and promoter of the National Wrestling Alliance, expanded further on the news. Corgan said, “It’s an honor to be able to bring back the NWA United States Tag Team Championships. Our tag team division is red hot and full of deserving athletes who will now have a chance to make history in this sport. We are also looking at top tier tag teams outside the NWA which could also have an opportunity to compete for the new U.S. tag titles.”

Since 1950, numerous versions of the NWA United States Tag Team Championship were defended across numerous territories. These included, but weren’t limited to, the Capitol Wrestling Corporation, Big Time Wrestling, Jim Crockett Promotions, and the NWA itself. Among the most notable titleholders were Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane, collectively known as The Midnight Express. Together, Eaton and Lane held the NWA United States Tag Team Championship on 3 occasions, their cumulative reigns totaling 511 days. Other notable titleholders include The Steiner Brothers and The Fabulous Freebirds.
