Preview: NJPW G1 Climax Day 6 — B Block (9/29/21)

NJPW G1 Climax Day 6

G1 Climax 31 continues to roll on for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) as each block begins to take shape more and more as to who could be walking out as the winner this year. Day 6 action will see the B Block take center stage once again, this time inside the legendary Korakuen Hall. “The Rainmaker” will main event for his third straight show as it will see CHAOS collide. Here’s a preview for G1 Climax Day 6.

G1 Climax Day 6 Card — B Block (9/29/21)

Taichi [4] vs. EVIL [2]

Taichi has started off his G1 Climax as good as anyone, defeating both Hirooki Goto and SANADA on his way to getting four points. The wins over a former tournament winner and one of last year’s finalists instantly makes Taichi an early favorite to win after some might have expected him to drop at least one of those. He will go one-on-one with EVIL to kick off Day 6. EVIL had a great back and forth match with YOSHI-HASHI in the opener for the B Block, picking up that win. He lost in the main event of Day 4 against Kazuchika Okada, leaving him at two points. These two are likely to finish toward the top of the B Block, so it could go either way on Wednesday.

SANADA [2] vs. Chase Owens [0]

SANADA is looking to get back on track following his loss to Taichi. Thankfully for him, Chase Owens presents the opportunity to do so in Day 6 action. After defeating Tama Tonga on Day 1, he will try to lean on stopping Bullet Club once again to get his third and fourth point. A loss to Owens could derail him from contention with the likes of Okada and Jeff Cobb looking unstoppable. Owens has lost his first two matches, falling to Cobb and Tonga.

Hirooki Goto [0] vs. Jeff Cobb [4]

The 2008 G1 Climax winner has not had a good start to his tournament as Goto has lost his first two matches to Taichi and Hiroshi Tanahashi. His Day 6 matchup against the undefeated Cobb makes it believable that this could be the third loss for one-third of the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Champions. If so, that could spell the end for Goto trying to make some magic happen for the first time in over a decade. Cobb, on the other hand, looks more and more unstoppable as the days pass by. He has shown quickly that the Tour of the Islands might be the most devastating move in NJPW right now, giving him a legitimate shot at winning the block. Goto can get the upset here but it feels like it is Cobb’s time to shine.

Hiroshi Tanahashi [2] vs. Tama Tonga [2]

“The Ace” was able to grab his first win of the G1 Climax when he defeated Goto in the opening match of Day 4. After his rivalry with Okada saw him come up short in his opening match, it was necessary for Tanahashi to grab the win there. He will look across the ring at the Guerillas of Destiny’s Tama Tonga, who has been very good in his first two opening contests, coming as close as one can to going undefeated. Tonga’s loss to SANADA was a tough one to accept but he made up for it with a win over his faction-mate Owens. Expect “The Ace” to still pull this one out.

Kazuchika Okada [4] vs. YOSHI-HASHI [0]

This year feels to be the year of “The Rainmaker” in the G1 Climax. Okada has already picked up two massive wins over Tanahashi and EVIL, instantly propelling him to the top of the block with few wrestlers of his prowess standing in front of him the rest of the way. A matchup with CHAOS member YOSHI-HASHI is an exciting one for fans as YOSHI-HASHI is showing that even when winless, he is a serious threat to pull off an upset on any given night. This feels like another win for Okada but do not count out YOSHI-HASHI in the main event.
