Heels on Starz Episode Two Review and Recap

The opening scene sees Jack Spade laying in his bed, writing up plans for the next show. We find out that Spade doesn’t pay the bills with the Duffy Wrestling League and actually has a side job selling lawnmowers. Jack is extremely unhappy at his job, and his boss taunts him about his black eye and wrestling being “fake.”

Back in the Duffy locker room, the wrestlers are standing around and watching footage of the “Florida Wrestling Dystopia”. The footage shown is actually footage from the early stages of TNA with the logos blurred out, which was insanely funny to me. In the footage, FWD owner Charlie Gully calls out Jack Spade and says that he owns pro wrestling in the South.

The wrestlers show genuine concern about DWL’s future and the drama within the company. Rooster Robbins brings up a great point when he says “If Jack treated his brother like that, how do you think he’s gonna treat us when we get a title shot?”

Crystal spends the day at Ace’s mom’s house (where Ace still lives) to try and cheer him up. Ace has spent the past two days calling Bill Hancock, trying to further talk about him moving to the “big leagues.” Whenever dinner is ready, Ace’s mom Carol Spade decided to not make enough dinner for Crystal as well. This obviously prompted Crystal to leave, to which Carol told her to stay away for good and that her and Ace’s relationship is “scripted.”

Charlie Gully and Willie Day meet at a diner in Duffy. Gully is extremely confident in FWD’s success and offers to buy Duffy’s event building and also offers Willie a job. Willie critiques Gully’s perception of wrestling and tells Gully that he’s going to fail. The scene closes by Gully telling Day to jump ship before it’s too late.

After a hard day at work, Jack is watching podcast reviews for the previous DWL show. Obviously, the reviews are extremely negative and are getting in his head. Willie calls Jack and informs him of the offers to buy the “dome,” to which Jack contemplates selling.

Ace eventually gets a call back from Bill Hancock, who tells him that he’s going to re-evaluate his situation again after he cried in the ring at the last show. This sends Ace into a drunken and depressed state.

Later that night, Jack gets a call from Carol about Ace being missing. This prompts Jack and Crystal to have an awkward car ride trying to look for Ace all over Duffy. Jack shows some type of clear resentment towards Crystal, but that’s unknown why.

After venturing around town all night, Jack and Crystal eventually find Ace at the local bar. Ace is extremely drunk and doing karaoke, which prompts a few other drunk men to start a fight with him. They call him a ton of vulgar names for being involved in “fake fighting,” which results in some real fighting. The scene ended with Crystal hitting a hurricanrana on one of the drunks, which obviously impressed Ace and Jack.

Jack and Crystal take Ace home afterward and right before they leave, Ace tells Jack that he hates him and that he ruined his life and career.

Crystal and Jack have a heart-to-heart outside about Ace. Crystal reveals that she was a fan of Jack’s recent decisions booking-wise and that she thinks Ace can be a really good heel.

After the nighttime, the whole Duffy locker room meets Big Jim in the hospital for the birth of his child. Jack reveals to his wife that Gulley offered to buy the dome and asks for advice, to which his wife doesn’t really give him a concrete response.

Jack and Ace make up and agree to try and take the Duffy Wrestling League to places they’ve never been. Ace agrees to stay for now as long as he has a say in his character and storylines, and guarantees that he’ll get scouted again soon.

Heels on Starz Episode Two ends the same way it started, with Jack going back to work at the Lawn Mower company. Staci Spade, Jack’s wife, is stuck at home again with herself and Thomas. In the closing scene, Staci realizes that she doesn’t need Jack to do all the manly things around the house and that she can be a strong, independent woman. She shoots a raccoon in the attic, fires up the lawnmower and begins mowing the lawn while Thomas plays Soccer by himself.

Final Review

Although Episode Two was nowhere near as eventful and serious as Episode One came to be, I still thoroughly enjoyed the journey that the show is taking us along, as evidenced by our Heels on Starz Episode Two recap.

Crystal’s fight to relevancy and respect is a very well-told story and I hope it results in her getting to wrestle, something that Willie Day has made it very clear she isn’t a fan of. But with Crystal getting closer to Jack and impressing him in the bar fight, I feel like the end result will be her wrestling.

Ace Spade seemed extremely reluctant to join back up with Jack, and who would blame him? Jack has proven that when it comes to the wrestling business, he’s only in it for himself and his family. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ace jump ship to the Florida Wrestling Dystopia.

Episode Three will bring us the first appearance for Ricky Rabies (CM Punk), so I’m extremely excited to see where that and the rest of the show goes from here.
