#AndNEW: Damian Priest Wins First WWE United States Championship at SummerSlam 2021

Damian Priest United States Championship SummerSlam

SummerSlam 2021 saw Damian Priest challenge Sheamus for the WWE United States Championship. For the past several weeks, “The Celtic Warrior” has found himself in the crosshairs of “The Archer of Infamy,” who previously had his hands full with The Miz and John Morrison. Following countless victories over the pair, Priest was able to set his sights entirely on Sheamus. In what many fans expected to be a hard-hitting encounter, the conclusion saw a new champion crowned. Following the closing bell, it was Damian Priest standing victorious at SummerSlam as the new United States Champion.

Damian Priest Wins the United States Title at SummerSlam

With this victory at SummerSlam, Damian Priest has won his first title on the main roster, which he joined earlier this year. This isn’t to say that Priest hasn’t tasted WWE gold beforehand. In August of 2020, at NXT TakeOver: XXX, Priest won the North American Championship in a Ladder Match. He would go on to hold the title for 67 days, successfully defending it against such names as Dexter Lumis and Johnny Gargano. Prior to signing with WWE, Priest held gold in other promotions. Chief among these was Ring of Honor; as Punishment Martinez, in 2018, he became the ROH World Television Champion.

Having lost to Damian Priest at SummerSlam, Sheamus’s third United States title reign has come to an end at 133 days. During this time, he had one successful title defense against Humberto Carrillo. Altogether, he has held the star-spangled title a total of 363 days. “The Celtic Warrior’s” other WWE accolades include four world title reigns from 2009 to 2015.
