Preview: AEW Dynamite (9/9/20)

AEW Dynamite

It’s the Dynamite fall-out show and AEW has some big things planned to follow-up on developing stories from All Out. That means a lot of promos as Matt Hardy, Jon Moxley, and Lance Archer will all speak, FTR will celebrate their new championships, Kip Sabian will announce his best man, and there will be four big matches, including with the TNT Championship on the line. All Out set up some stories and now it’s up to Dynamite to deliver on the moments of what comes next. That all begins tonight.

Matt Hardy Speaks

At All Out on Saturday, Matt Hardy took a horrific fall when his head hit the concrete instead of the table he was meant to go through after falling several feet from a lift. This led to a stoppage of his match with Sammy Guevara, only for the match to pick up later, go straight to the finish, and end when Hardy and Guevara both climbed scaffolding, that Hardy threw Guevara off to end the match. It was equally puzzling and disappointing to see Hardy back out there after what looked like a devastating drop. And it was made even more controversial when Reby Hardy, Matt’s wife, tweeted in contrast to what Tony Khan had said, confirming her husband “1000 percent” had a concussion when AEW’s head said differently. According to Khan, Matt Hardy was cleared to return to the ring and so they did. Tonight, we’ll hear from the man himself and hopefully get answers regarding his condition and what comes next after his victory over Guevara.

TNT Championship: Mr. Brodie Lee vs Dustin Rhodes

It’s been five decades of working hard for Dustin Rhodes to lead this point, an opportunity for another title, the 29th of his career. But more than the gold, Rhodes is still fighting for his family. His one-on-one with Mr. Brodie Lee is every bit about what the former did to Cody as it is about capturing the title his brother held not that long ago. Rhodes will have to watch his back however as the Dark Order is always looming and in this case, given the results of All Out, they’ll no doubt want to ensure Lee isn’t disappointed yet again. As for Lee himself, this will be his first defense of the TNT Championship. Perhaps it’s only fitting he wrestles the brother of the man he took the title from in the first place. Lee will look to do to Rhodes what he did to Cody so the veteran would be wise to have his own crew in his corner, just to make sure he doesn’t leave the ring on a stretcher.

Jon Moxley Speaks

Jon Moxley is nothing if not savvy. On Saturday at All Out, Moxley took advantage of some missteps from Wardlow and a downed referee, in order to hit the Paradigm Shift, a move he was banned from using. But you know how the saying goes, “if Moxley used the paradigm shift in the ring and no ref was around to see it, did he really use the paradigm shift?” MJF seems to think so and has been on Twitter nonstop this week expressing his anger that he was cheated out of the world title. MJF will not be going away anytime soon, but for now, he’ll have to wait his turn in line as Moxley is preparing for his new challenger, one he is familiar with from his recent time in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Expect Moxley to address his actions on Saturday, but mainly the champ is always looking ahead so look for him to have some choice words for his new challenger, Lance Archer.

Lucha Brothers vs Jurassic Express

Looking to be the show-stealing match of a card light on in-ring action, Lucha Brothers vs Jurassic Express was meant to happen a long time ago. In fact, according to Jungle Boy, it was meant to be the match through which Jurassic Express made their TV debut. But as they say in wrestling, “card to subject to change.” The match didn’t happen then, but now, over a year later, it’s happening and both the wrestlers and fans can’t wait. Lucha Brothers haven’t had much action since coming back to AEW this year, but when they have been in the ring, they’ve been great. They’ve been winning. And that’s precisely the impact Eddie Kingston will have as he builds his boys toward a tag title opportunity. Jurassic Express meanwhile, has been middling for a while and will be looking for a marquee win on Dynamite here after losing to the Young Bucks at All Out. Both of these teams represent AEW’s greatest strength, it’s tag team division, so look for them to really put on a barn burner on Wednesday night’s AEW Dynamite.

Lance Archer Speaks

Speaking of Moxley’s #1 contender…On Wednesday, we’ll also here from the challenger himself as Lance Archer, winner of the Casino Battle Royale, will speak. Archer was the first entrant to confirm for the match, doing so over a week prior. And he made a promise, the same one he’s been making for a while, “everybody dies.” Still with just the one blemish on his record, that being his loss to Cody for the TNT Championship, Archer has been a dominant force in AEW and will represent a real test to Moxley’s reign. But what will he, and his manager Jake Roberts have to say to the AEW fandom on Wednesday night’s AEW Dynamite? We’ll have to watch and find out.

Nyla Rose vs Tay Conti

AEW’s newest signee will be in action on Wednesday as Tay Conti takes on Nyla Rose. The expectation is that Rose will manhandle Conti, but looks aren’t all that they seem. Conti has the potential to have quite the army in her corner if she just signs on the dotted line. Conti has been holding on to her Dark Order invitation for some time now, noting that she didn’t want to jump into things. But perhaps a loss to Rose is exactly what leads Conti to do just that. Her tag team partner Anna Jay no doubt wants her in their orbit so you can bet that Conti’s decision will play into how this match goes on Wednesday night’s AEW Dynamite.

No DQ: Chris Jericho and Jake Hager vs Sonny Kiss and Joey Janela

With Orange Cassidy seemingly in the rearview mirror due to him winning the rubber match of the Mimosa Mayhem, Chris Jericho is moving on to new things, and possibly even a television feud with the Bad Boy Joey Janela. Jericho and Janela faced off for the first time prior to All Out in what Le Champion was calling a tune-up for his match with Cassidy. As Cassidy watched from the crowd, Jericho put the boots to Janela, picking up a pretty easy win as he looked to show the Freshly Squeezed one what awaited him at the PPV. But the real action started after the final bell rang as both Jericho and Jake Hager attacked Janela and bloodied him until his tag team partner, Sonny Kiss, as well as Cassidy, came out for the save. On Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, these two teams will get a chance against each other in what marks a rare televised showing for Janela and Kiss.

Kip Sabian Picks his Best Man

Who’s it going to be? Last week, Kip Sabian teased a big announcement, the reveal of his best man at his and Penelope Ford’s upcoming wrestling wedding. The two real-life spouses are officially getting wed in-ring style which means, expect the unexpected as wrestling weddings almost always go off the rails in hilarious fashion. Sabian doesn’t exactly have many friends in the back so it’s anyone’s guess who could stand up for him. Perhaps it will be someone not signed with AEW, who Sabian knows from his UK indie days. Or as some have joked, in hilarious fashion, have it be Ford’s ex, Joey Janela. The possibilities are endless as no doubt Sabian will have someone special to bring out on Wednesday night’s AEW Dynamite.

Orange Cassidy vs Angelico

Adding one more match to round out the card, AEW announced that Orange Cassidy would be in action against Angelico. This should be a fun one. Angelico and Cassidy have never wrestled in singles action before, though they did meet once before when TH2 teamed with Pac against Best Friends and Cassidy. Nothing really on the line here, just two really exciting wrestlers in singles action. A refreshing change of pace to all the storyline driven matches and segments planned for tonight’s card.

Programming note: The September 16th episode of AEW Dynamite will air on September 17th instead due to TNT airing the NBA playoffs. Make sure to set your DVR in order not to miss any of the action!
