The Element of Surprise: A History of Surprise Entrants in The Royal Rumble

Since 1988, the Royal Rumble Match has always proven to be one of the highlights of the calendar year. Used to kick off the road to WrestleMania, the Rumble has produced countless memorable moments, while also propelling the careers of numerous of its winners. One of the best things about the match, particularly in the last few years, has been the surprise element of the match, with legends returning for a one-off appearance for a cheap pop, NXT stars stopping by to give the casual watchers a chance to see what they’re missing out on, and the injured list making their unannounced return.

However, how much success have these surprise faces had upon entering the Rumble?

Before we run through the competitors, a bit of admin to see what defines a surprise entrant;

A surprise entrant will be classed as someone who isn’t actively on TV at the time of the event, either due to their status as a legend/NXT talent or if the person is returning in the Rumble following a layoff due to injury or other reason. Anyone who competed on the Royal Rumble card in another match and entered the Rumble later on (such as Dolph Ziggler did in 2012) without being announced won’t be included. In addition, cases where wrestlers entered just to fill the numbers also won’t be mentioned here – apologies to all the Tyler Reks fans out there. Finally, the likes of Carlos Colon, Dick Murdoch, and Latin Lover also won’t be included, as their appearances had been confirmed ahead of time on minor shows.

1997 – Jerry Lawler and Mil Mascaras

1997 marked the first ‘proper’ surprise entrants, as both Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler and Mexican wrestling legend Mil Mascaras would enter the fray. Lawler’s inclusion would make him the first man to ever leave the commentary desk during a Royal Rumble Match to enter it himself, while Mascaras would leave a lasting impression during the bout, but not for all the right reasons. He would eliminate himself, diving off the turnbuckles onto the already-eliminated Pierroth at ringside. Not the best ending to the Rumble for Mascaras.

1998 – Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind

Although Cactus Jack was officially confirmed for the 1998 Royal Rumble Match, no-one expected ‘The Hardcore Legend’ to also enter under his alter egos of Dude Love and Mankind too. After starting the bout with Chainsaw Charlie, Mick Foley would then enter the match halfway through as Mankind, and then just before the end of the bout as Dude Love, giving him the best possible chance to win the Rumble. While he wouldn’t go on to win the whole thing, it was certainly a memorable moment courtesy of the future WWE Hall of Famer.

1999 – Mabel

At the 1999 Royal Rumble, otherwise known as Vince Wins Lol, Headbanger Mosh was scheduled to enter the match, only to be ambushed during his entrance at the hands of Mabel. The superheavyweight would take Mosh’s spot in the match, but in hindsight, perhaps he should’ve stayed in the back. The former King of the Ring winner would be eliminated by Bradshaw, Faarooq, and Mideon, a trio who weren’t even officially in the match, after a minute and a half. The next night, he was rechristened as Viscera, as he was indoctrinated into The Ministry of Darkness. Wrestling!

2000 – Bob Backlund

In 2000, the iconic Bob Backlund shockingly entered the Royal Rumble Match, returning back to Madison Square Garden – a venue he had sold out several times throughout his career. Although Backlund didn’t last especially long at a measly two minutes, it was still a surprise to see the legendary grappler still tying up in 2000.

2001 – The Big Show, Drew Carey, Haku, and The Honky Tonk Man

In terms of the four surprise entrants from the 2001 Rumble, there was a right mixture. You had The Big Show returning from his time spent in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), you had the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion The Honky Tonk Man returning for a brief appearance, Haku coming over from World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and Drew Carey appearing as a celebrity appearance to fill up the match. It was an odd quartet of stars for sure, but they were all part of one of the most memorable Rumbles in history.

2002 – The Godfather and Mr Perfect

The Godfather and Mr Perfect both entered the 2002 Royal Rumble Match, and had particularly different showings. While Perfect would last just over 15 minutes with a perfect showing (pun very much intended), The Godfather would only last a mere two minutes before being ousted from the bout. Not the best showing for the former Papa Shango, but at least it wouldn’t be his final showing in the bout.

2004 – Mick Foley

As was the case with Mabel, Mick Foley wasn’t originally scheduled to be in the 2004 Royal Rumble Match, but with the tensions between he and Randy Orton reaching a high during this time period, he had to find a way into the bout. When Test was found laid out backstage, ‘The Hardcore Legend’ was sent in as his replacement, going straight for ‘The Apex Predator’. Foley had such hatred for Orton during this time that he didn’t even care about eliminating himself.

2005 – Daniel Puder

After his victory in the 2004 season of WWE Tough Enough, Daniel Puder was entered into the Royal Rumble Match to a rather dismal reception. He became an immediate target for the other competitors in the ring, taking a beating from Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Hardcore Holly for his troubles. The less said about Puder’s participation in the Rumble the better.

2008 – Jimmy Snuka, John Cena, and Roddy Piper

In 2008, the Royal Rumble Match featured one of the biggest pops in the match’s history, as John Cena made a return from injury much sooner than expected as he took the number 30 spot to go on and win the whole match. It marked the first time a surprise entrant had won the Rumble Match, with Cena not waiting until WrestleMania by using his championship opportunity at No Way Out against then-WWE Champion Randy Orton. In addition, WWE Hall of Fame inductees “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper both entered the fray in an attempt to gain the title match for themselves to no avail.

2009 – Rob Van Dam

Despite commentary initially thinking it was Triple H entering the match (‘The Game’ had actually already entered at this point), Rob Van Dam entered the 2009 Royal Rumble to quite an ovation. ‘The Whole F’N Show’ had a decent showing in the match with his high-flying style coming into good use here, but Chris Jericho would be having none of it as the future ‘Le Champion’ eliminated him later on. A great showing from RVD nonetheless though.

2010 – Beth Phoenix and Edge

There were only two surprise entrants in the 2010 Royal Rumble Match, but both of them were extremely significant. Firstly, we had Beth Phoenix, with ‘The Glamazon’ becoming the second woman to enter the match after the previous two appearances made by Chyna. Then, we had Edge returning from a serious injury, going straight for his former tag partner Chris Jericho, as ‘The Rated R Superstar’ went onto win the whole match. As was the case with John Cena two years before though, returning from injury to win the Rumble doesn’t guarantee a championship victory at WrestleMania.

2011 – Booker T and Diesel

2011 marked the first (and only) time WWE hosted a 40-man Royal Rumble Match, but surprisingly it only featured two surprise additions, as both Booker T and Diesel made their returns to WWE after spending the previous few years in Total Nonstop Action (TNA). Booker would enter right in the middle of The New Nexus‘ domination of the match, lasting just over a minute as a result, whereas ‘Big Daddy Cool’ would last just under three minutes. Thankfully, he went on to fued with Triple H later in the year. That was good, right?

2012 – Booker T, Jerry Lawler, Jim Duggan, Kharma, Michael Cole, Ricardo Rodriguez, and The Road Dogg

2012 featured a plethora of surprise entrants, but sadly, three of them were the commentary team for the evening as Jerry Lawler, Booker T, and Michael Cole all decided to remove their suits (or jumper, in Jerry’s case) to enter the Rumble. Alongside those three, the winner of the inaugural match ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, the third female to enter Kharma, Alberto Del Rio‘s personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez, and multi-time Tag Team Champion The Road Dogg all entered to mixed reactions.

2013 – Chris Jericho, The Godfather, and Goldust

Two unofficial records were set in the 2013 Royal Rumble Match, as Chris Jericho returned from hiatus to set the record for the longest time spent in a Rumble by a surprise entrant, whereas The Godfather once again entered the bout to set the record for the shortest time spent by a surprise performer. As well as Goldust making his comeback, which later led to a Tag Team Championships victory alongside brother Cody Rhodes, this was an alright year for surprise entrants.

2014 – Alexander Rusev, JBL, Kevin Nash, and Sheamus

The 2014 instalment would see another Rumble first, as Alexander Rusev became the first NXT star to enter (Bo Dallas won a tournament in 2013, so he technically doesn’t count). It may not have been the greatest showing of all time from ‘The Bulgarian Brute’, but it’s still in the history books. JBL was also added to the list of active commentators who entered the bout, while Kevin Nash also popped back into action, and Sheamus made his return from an injury suffered the previous summer.

2015 – The Boogeyman, Bubby Ray Dudley, and Diamond Dallas Page

Comparing the three surprise entrants from the 2015 Rumble is near impossible. An absolute weirdo in the form of The Boogeyman, a hardcore icon in the form of Bubba Ray Dudley (they were in Philadelphia after all), and a man known for being an excellent singles performer in the form of Diamond Dallas Page. They were an odd bunch to say the least, but at least WWE capitalised on being in Philly by bringing back one half of The Dudley Boyz. Plus, we got an interaction with Boogeyman and Bray Wyatt, which was something.

2016 – AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, and Triple H

2016 was a monumental year for the Royal Rumble Match. Not only was it the second time in history where the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (as it was then known) was on the line, which Triple H would go on to capture, but it marked the WWE debut of AJ Styles, fresh out of New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). The reaction received by ‘The Phenomenal One’ was intense – the camera angles though? Not so much, as they preferred to focus on the reaction of defending champion Roman Reigns. Sami Zayn, still in NXT at the time, also came into the Rumble to scrap with Kevin Owens. Fight forever and all that jazz.

2017 – Mark Henry and Tye Dillinger

In terms of the 2017 Royal Rumble Match, it was a star-studded affair, with Brock Lesnar, Goldberg, and The Undertaker all tossing their names into the mat as the road to WrestleMania kicked off. The surprise entrants weren’t necessarily huge names, but they both had a reason for being there. Texas native Mark Henry, who had retired a few months before, returned in front of a San Antonio crowd, while Tye Dillinger actually entered at number ten to suit his ‘Perfect 10’ persona. Those random draws sure are lucky.

2018 (Men’s) – Adam Cole, Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas, Dolph Ziggler, The Hurricane, and Rey Mysterio

The men’s Royal Rumble Match in 2018 has gone down as one of the best Rumbles in history. With several memorable moments throughout, it would see Shinsuke Nakamura win the bout to a huge reaction from fans worldwide. NXT‘s Adam Cole and then-NXT Champion Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas both made their presence felt during the bout just 24 hours after gruelling encounters with Aleister Black and Johnny Gargano respectively. Dolph Ziggler had a fairly weak return after taking a month off, The Hurricane randomly showed up, and Rey Mysterio made a long-awaited return to the company, setting the seeds for his full-time return later in the year.

As expected, the first women’s Royal Rumble Match relied a lot on surprise entrants to help fill out the field, but every last one of them made the most of their time in the match. Returning legends such as Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool had impressive showings, with McCool holding the record for most eliminations until this year’s match, while Ember Moon and Kairi Sane also showed everyone why the NXT talents shouldn’t be looked passed. A good mixture of talent here.

In 2019, the men’s Rumble would kick off with a surprise, as Jeff Jarrett came in at number two to interrupt Elias. Who else would interrupt ‘The Drifter’ than ‘Double J’ himself? As the match progressed, Aleister Black, Johnny Gargano, Kurt Angle, and Pete Dunne all sauntered down to ringside, while Nia Jax (who had been the penultimate person eliminated in the women’s version of the match) ambushed R-Truth during his entrance to take his spot in the match. This made her the first person to compete in two Royal Rumble Matches in the same night – big match Nia.

While the 2018 women’s Rumble featured a lot of legends from the past returning, the 2019 version would rely solely on stars of the future to fill out the surprise entrants list. Candice LeRae, Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, and the former NXT UK Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley were the more obvious choices for the bout, while Kacy Catanzaro and Xia Li also made their main roster debuts here. Kacy, in particular, proved her worth here with her Ninja Warrior expertise coming into good use.

Now, for the most recent Royal Rumble Matches. The men’s instalment from 2020 proved to be one of the best-built stories every created in a Rumble – when Drew McIntyre eliminated the seemingly unstoppable Brock Lesnar, the roof came off the venue. In terms of the surprise entrants for the bout, we had Matt Riddle, MVP, and the new NXT North American Champion, Keith Lee. Oh, and Edge returned from retirement. Yes, ‘The Ultimate Opportunist’ has returned, and your writer couldn’t be more happy about it.

The 2020 women’s Royal Rumble Match combined the best of both worlds from its previous two bouts in terms of its surprise entrants, with a mixture of legends and future stars (plus Santina Marella) making the journey to Texas for the bout. Beth Phoenix put in one hell of a showing, receiving a nasty cut on the back of her head that saw blood gush out of her head, while Bianca Belair broke the record for most eliminations as she racked up eight eliminations throughout the match. The likes of Dakota Kai, Tegan Nox, Mercedes Martinez, and Mighty Molly also entered the fray to fill out the numbers, with former NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler coming in last, a favourite to win as she tied Bianca’s record for most eliminations.
