MLW Signs Lucha Underground Co-Creator Chris DeJoseph Ahead of PPV Debut

Chris DeJoseph hired MLW

With their first-ever PPV, Saturday Night SuperFight, just a few days away, Major League Wrestling made a huge announcement on Tuesday that was first reported by Sports Illustrated. Chris DeJoseph, the co-creator and former co-executive producer of the famed Lucha Underground, will be joining MLW in the same role.

For those who may not know, Chris DeJoseph was the brains behind creative and production for the cutting-edge show Lucha Underground, which ironically enough, aired its debut episode five years ago to the day (October 29, 2014). LU lasted four seasons and in many ways, was considered to have the formula for what a future of pro wrestling could look like as slick production was combined with incredible character development and storylines.

LU brought some of the top Lucha wrestlers in the world to television fame as Chris DeJoseph was behind such characters as Prince Puma, King Cuerno, Pentagon Jr., Mil Muertes, Fenix, Dario Cueto, Matanza Cueto, Johnny Mundo, Jake Strong, and many many more. The show took place in Boyle Heights at a location that was dubbed, “The Temple.” In its final season, the show moved to Union Central Cold Storage located in downtown Los Angeles. But through it all, the “believers,” the name given to fans, remained as LU had a small but loyal following during its entire run.

While Lucha Underground has yet to make an official announcement regarding its end, it is widely considered that season four was the last as most of the marquee players have left for other companies and there hasn’t been a peep regarding a potential fifth season. And now, with Chris DeJoseph finding a new home with MLW, it is all but certain that the Temple has shut its doors for good.

Chris DeJoseph had the following to say regarding having to work with MLW:

“Since the last season of Lucha Underground, I’ve had an itch to get back in the game,” DeJoseph said in the SI piece. “I’ve been watching what they’ve been doing and the steps they are taking to keep building, and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty with MLW.”

MLW announced that Chris DeJoseph will begin his first day with the company in his new role this weekend for the company’s first PPV. DeJoseph has an excellent array of talent to work with moving forward and will be reunited with some of his old LU roster, including, from a producing side, Konnan, and Rey Horus, who fans of LU will remember as  El Dragon Azteca Jr. When asked about working with the entire MLW roster, DeJoseph was no doubt excited, saying, “Look at that MLW roster—Alex Hammerstone, Brian Pillman Jr., the Von Erichs, Tom Lawlor, Davey Boy Jr.—you can go on and on, there are so many young stars. My job will be to help make them better performers and better characters.”

MLW SuperFight will take place from Cicero Stadium in Cicero, Illinois this Saturday. The show will be headlined by MLW World Heavyweight Champion Jacob Fatu defending his title against LA Park in a no DQ match.
