Match Point: Hart Foundation vs. The Lucha Brothers (8/24/19)

Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition looks at a huge match-up featuring two of the best tag teams in the game today, as the new Hart Foundation of Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr. take on the Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) for Blitzkrieg Pro in Connecticut.

At the end of August, wrestling fans in the New England area will bear witness to a dream match confrontation between two of the hottest tag teams in the world right now in the new Hart Foundation and The Lucha Brothers. While the two have faced off once before – The Hart Foundation won their current Major League Wrestling (MLW) World Tag Team Championships off the Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) this past February before they departed the company – this one finds both tandems in a better place, and the Hart Foundation will be managed by someone who knows the brand intimately, in 2x WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hitman” Hart, the uncle of both Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr.

The new Hart Foundation has proven to be one of MLW’s biggest success stories. Since pairing Teddy and Davey Jr. alongside Brian Pillman Jr., the trio has become one of the most dominant powers in MLW. The duo of Hart and Smith held the MLW World Tag Team titles for 154-days (they just lost them earlier this month to their rivals The Dynasty‘s MJF and Richard Holiday), while Teddy Hart has been the MLW Middleweight Champion for 229-days. Apart from dominating MLW, the stable has also worked elsewhere, including Maine’s Limitless Wrestling and Ohio’s Real Shoot Wrestling (RSW), and now they head to Blitzkrieg Pro in Connecticut on Saturday, August 24. While Pillman Jr. has proven to be a worthy third member of the stable, the experience of Bret Hart in their corner offers far more experience to a tag team already loaded with it.

For Pentagon Jr. and Fenix, this represents one of their last US indie dates before becoming exclusive to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in the fall when they debut on TNT, so it’s only fitting they get to finish the war they started in MLW at the turn of the new year. Injuries halted their program in MLW, but now that the former PWG, IMPACT, and MLW World Tag Team Champions (and reigning AAA World Tag Team champs) are ready for a fight, it’s time for the now more polished tandem of Hart and Smith to face the Lucha Brothers one last time.
