Match Point: A One And Only Phenomenal – AJ Styles vs Ricochet

AJ Styles vs Ricochet

Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition looks at an indie dream match in WWE featuring two former indie sensations who last fought in 2014. On this Monday’s Raw, it’s Ricochet vs. AJ Styles.

At tonights WWE Stomping GroundsRicochet achieved a life long dream when he had his first taste of Gold in the WWE after defeating Samoa Joe for the United States Title. After the match Ricochet was received by his colleagues at the Gorilla Position. But, as quickly as he relished the gold, a few “Good Brothers” followed up with “The One And Only”. A recently returning AJ Styles being accompanied by Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson interrupted a photoshoot Ricochet was in the middle of.

As they congratulated him while taking pictures with him, AJ stated he’d see him tomorrow night on Raw. Since the meeting, WWE.com has just announced that the two would be squaring off tomorrow night on Raw in a non-title match. The two stud athletes are no stranger to each other, however, as the former leader of the Bullet Club at the time, while putting on some of the best matches of his career in New Japan Pro Wrestling, had a match against Ricochet. On December 19th, 2014 at House Of Glory Wrestling in a show called Phenonemal Showdown, the two had a nearly 25-minute match that had the audience in awe throughout the duration of the match. Unfortunately, the match would result in a no-contest due to interference from Anthony Gangone and “The Bad Boy” Joey Janela who had their own respective feuds with Styles and Ricochet.

Five years later it appears we will get a match of two revolutionary athletes when AJ Styles and Ricochet go one-on-one. Unlike their first encounter, however, will we see a clear winner in this match? Can “The One And Only” Ricochet beat the former WWE Champion in a what would be considered a shocking defeat? Or will the Phenomenal One continue to show the world just how good he is? What about Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows? How will they play into the match? Find out tomorrow night on WWE Monday Night Raw.
