This past week, two recent WWE signees from the indie circuit finished up their independent bookings and will be reporting to the WWE’s Performance Center next week to begin work with NXT. New Zealand’s Evie and Wales’ Nixon Newell both completed their indie obligations, following reports they’d signed with the WWE back in December of last year. There’s no word if either will debut on NXT television at the next set of tapings or they’ll hold off until the upcoming Women’s Tournament to properly introduce them to the WWE Universe.
Evie (real name Cheree Crowley) is a nine year veteran of the indie circuit, originally in her home country of New Zealand and neighboring Australia. She was a regular in Australia’s Pro Wrestling Women’s Alliance (PWWA), where she won the company’s Championship once, as well as in North American promotions like Shimmer and SHINE (she was a Shimmer Tag Team Champion with current NXT Superstar Ruby Riot). For the past year, she’d also been working in Japan with Stardom. Evie’s last indie event was Sunday April 28, when she lost in the finals of the Vera & Jenny Memorial Cup tournament to Kellyanne English with Melbourne City Wrestling.
Nixon Newell is still a young up-and-comer, only 22 years old, but she’s been wrestling since her teens. She debuted with Pete Dunne‘s English promotion Attack! in 2014, but has become a regular with both PROGRESS and WCPW (where she was their inaugural Women’s Champion), as well as making her Stardom debut earlier this year. Her last indie appearance was this past Sunday with IPW:UK where she defeated Joey Ryan for the DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship (only to lose it back to Ryan moments later).
Another indie star seemingly made his last appearance on the weekend as well, when German grappler Axel Deiter Jr. made his farewell at PROGRESS Chapter 47, following . Previously, his home promotion wXw in Germany had announced his departure from the company on April 30 to continue his career “overseas”. The speculation is that he’s headed to NXT as well (or possibly Impact Wrestling), as the other major North American promotions like Ring of Honor or PWG would have afforded him to still work for wXw. There’s also a possibility that he could join the WWE UK show that begins taping soon, as William Regal mentioned that the program would highlight European stars, not just those from the United Kingdom.
