Manchester United Wonderkid Flops – Federico Macheda
Signing for United at 16
Born in Rome in 1991, Macheda began his youth career at Lazio. Due to Italian rules, he wasn’t permitted to sign a professional contract until he was 18, allowing United to swoop in and sign the striker shortly after his 16th birthday.
At 16, Macheda went straight into the Manchester United under-18s squad alongside notable names such as Rafael, Fabio and Danny Welbeck. He would not only score on his debut, but would go on to become the under-18s top goalscorer that season, as well as make his debut for the reserves.
The Italian signed a professional contract at Old Trafford on his 17th birthday, and as top scorer for the under-18s, he was yet another Manchester United wonderkid in waiting. He wouldn’t get his opportunity in the first time immediately, continuing to hone his skills in the under-18 side under long-time manager, Paul McGuinness. He began to hit a rich vein of form towards the latter end of the season, scoring eight in eight for the reserves. This form saw him rewarded with a spot on the bench under Sir Alex Ferguson.
For context, this was a side that included names like Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez and current United boss, Michael Carrick. Legends of the game and yet, on his debut, it would be the 18-year-old Italian who would snatch the headlines.
‘That’ Aston Villa goal and United Career
Macheda was handed his first-team debut as a substitute, coming on for Nani in the 61st minute. At the time, the Red Devils had just conceded, putting them 2-1 down. Ronaldo would pull things level with an 80th-minute equaliser, and into Fergie time the game went. Macheda would receive the ball from a typical pinpoint pass from Giggs, hit a lightning-quick Cruyff turn and attempt an extremely ambitious shot, whilst slipping over, from a wide position.
In the moment, a ridiculous decision. In a time before xG, this one goes down as extremely ambitious. What we saw, however, is arguably one of the most famous goals scored at Old Trafford. The ball would curl past a fully outstretched Brad Friedel and nestle in the back of the net. Sprinting towards the Stretford End, the youngster was tackled to the floor by a celebrating Darren Fletcher, joined on the ground by Welbeck, Giggs and Carrick. Johnny Evans joined to scream into the camera, and even Fergie looked a little surprised with what he’d just seen.
Macheda, the latest Manchester United wonderkid on the block, had made history. He would go on to feature on the bench for United, scoring again against Sunderland just 46 seconds after coming on the pitch. After his first season, he was awarded the Jimmy Murphy Academy Player of the Year.
After suffering several injuries, the Italian was unable to sustain a run in the first team, leading to Sir Alex looking to loan him out.
Loans and Move to Wales
The former Manchester United wonderkid returned to his native Italy with a loan move to Serie A with Sampdoria. Macheda would continue his impressive form of hitting the ground running, scoring on his first start for Sampdoria. It would be his only goal in Italy, and he was unable to save Sampdoria from relegation to Serie B.
A return to United didn’t see him cement a place in the first team, however, with a loan move to Queens Park Rangers, he would receive the experience he needed. That was before injuries again cut his time in London short.
A more successful loan move to Bundesliga team Stuttgart saw Macheda stay injury-free and make 18 appearances, although he was unable to register a single goal in his time in Germany. Far from the Manchester United wonderkid that fans had once tipped him to be.

The following season saw a drop in competition for the Italian, moving to Doncaster Rovers on loan in the Championship. Scoring three in 15, he suffered another injury and returned to Manchester for treatment. The second half of the 2013/14 season saw another loan, this time to Birmingham City, again in the Championship. Macheda’s 10 league goals in 18 appearances helped keep The Blues up, only saving them from relegation as a result of goal difference. The irony is the team that was relegated on goal difference… was Doncaster Rovers.
The potential of ‘making it’ as a Manchester United wonderkid was over for the attacker. The Italian was released by the Premier League giants and signed for Cardiff City under the tutelage of United legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Struggling Form, Drop in Competition and Greek Super League
From Manchester United wonderkid to Championship side Cardiff City – Federico Macheda was ready to rebuild his career. Still just 23, the Italian still had the opportunity to ‘make it’ in England.
He started well, scoring a brace on his debut, but it went downhill from there. During his first season, he scored just six goals in 21 appearances in the league and was left out of 15 games across the course of the campaign. He started just 13 times, despite not being injured during that time.
It was clear that Cardiff wasn’t a good fit for Macheda. He struggled to break into the team, making no league starts during his second term. He was loaned to Championship club, Nottingham Forest. Again, however, he struggled. He made just three outings for Forest, returned to Wales and had his contract cancelled.
Novara was next for the former Manchester United wonderkid who burst onto the scene at Old Trafford. The Serie B side finished just outside of the play-off preliminary rounds, and Macheda averaged a goal every three games in the league, including a run of five in six. His second season in Italy wasn’t as successful as he was unable to save Novara from relegation. He averaged a goal every 10 games and left the club when his contract expired.
Macheda signed for his 10th club, Greek giants Panathinaikos. He got off to a blistering start, netting 11 times in 28 appearances. His second season continued the trend, scoring 15 strikes in 37 games, a career best to date for the attacker. His third in Greece saw him hit double figures for the third time in a row, scoring 10 in 33. During his final campaign, Macheda didn’t complete a full 90 minutes; however, he did become the 13th foreign player to achieve the milestone of making 100 appearances for Panathinaikos.
Turkey, Cyprus and Back to Greece
After parting company with Panathinaikos, Macheda signed with Ankaragucu, who had just been promoted to the Turkish Super Lig. He was inconsistent at best, only making 13 appearances and scoring a single goal.
He was given another chance in Turkey, making 28 outings for Ankaragucu during his second season. Yet again, however, Macheda couldn’t do enough to save his team from relegation, as they finished 17th. He scored four more goals than the previous season, albeit in a failing effort.

A loan move to APOEL in the Cypriot first division saw him still struggle for form, only scoring two in 17.
Returning to his old stomping ground of Greece, Macheda signed for Asteras Tripolis, hoping to rediscover his lost form. He initially signed on a one-year deal, but after scoring six in 27, he re-signed for a second season. The 2025/26 season saw Macheda score three in 10 in all competitions.
Why didn’t it work
Standing at 6ft 1in, quick across the ground and young enough to nurture, Federico Macheda had all the elements to go down as one of the best Manchester United wonderkids in recent history.
After his blistering start against Aston Villa, it was looking promising, although, unfortunately for the Italian, his debut was the peak of his career. It wasn’t a lack of effort, nor was it a poor attitude. He didn’t suffer with any career-changing injuries that held him back, it appears that it was simple.

Macheda was overhyped based on a single moment. The goal he scored against Aston Villa was an amazing piece of skill, there’s no denying it. However, it was unreasonable to assume that he would be able to produce moment after moment. He was a player who, based on the numbers, was below average.
His player profile was unclear. He began as an impact sub but couldn’t make enough of an impact consistently from the bench.
Although he didn’t hit the heights of other Manchester United wonderkids, he will always be remembered for ‘that’ goal against Aston Villa, and no one can ever take that moment away from him.
