Breaking Down The Cost of the World Cup for England Fans

Flights

England’s first game will take place on Wednesday, 17th June, against Croatia at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Flights from London Heathrow to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the closest to the game, will set fans back £711. Although there is a cheaper option at £498, it would take over 40 hours, including two stops and an airport change. A lot of admin for anyone, but if you want to save over £200, it could be worth it.

Fans are going to incur further costs travelling between games. Unlike the Qatar World Cup, games are spread across three countries, meaning if fans are to watch their team live, travel between games has to be taken into consideration.

Travel Between Games

Let’s dream that firstly, England top Group L and secondly, that they reach the World Cup final. The further The Three Lions get in the tournament, the more it will cost fans.

England’s first group game will be in Texas, with the second taking place in Boston. Travel will set fans back roughly £193. Their final group game will be in New York, and travel from Boston to New York is roughly £93 for a flight, although other options are available for the shorter trip. Trains for £37 can be bought and will take roughly three and a half hours.

Assuming England finish top of Group L, their round of 32 game will take place in Atlanta, with their round of 16 match in Mexico City. It’s then over to Miami Gardens, Florida, for their quarter-final before heading back to Atlanta for the semi-final. The final will take place back in New York.

Let’s break down the cost of flight prices for these journeys.

Knockout Stage Flight Costs

England’s final group game is in New York. Travel from The Big Apple to Atlanta, Georgia is £93. From Atlanta, fans must make their way to Mexico for the first time of the tournament for a game at the Estadio Azteca. Flights will set fans back £309 at the time of writing. From Mexico City, England will then travel to Miami for £136 for fans.

England’s semi-final match will take place back in Atlanta, with flights setting fans back £60. The final is set to take place in New York, costing fans £83 in flights.

A total cost of £1678.

Then, fans must get back to England from New York, which will cost £300 the day after the final, bumping the cost of travel up to nearly £2000 for travel between games and back home.

Match Tickets

If fans are lucky enough to have been able to secure World Cup tickets, these come at a cost, too.

The cost of the World Cup for England fans will, of course, be affected by how deep into the tournament they progress. Although there are some £45 tickets available for fans after backlash at original ticket prices, you have to be a ‘loyal fan’ to gain one. What criteria you must hit to gain one of these ‘cheap’ tickets hasn’t been made public, but it is at the discretion of the qualified countries association, in England’s case, the FA.

The following costs are for the lowest category of seats available.

The cost of all three group games for England Supporters Travel Club members will total £530.

A round of 32 ticket will cost a minimum of £175, with a round of 16 match costing £220. It’s from the quarter-final, when the cost of the World Cup for England fans significantly rises. A quarter-final ticket is priced at £508, and a semi-final ticket is a staggering £687.

If Thomas Tuchel’s men make the final, the lowest category ticket will set supporters back £3141.

Tickets alone will cost fans £5261.

Accommodation

Unlike in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, fans will have to stay in multiple locations and different accommodations during the World Cup. We look at the average price per night in each of the places England will play a game.

Texas – £104 per night
Boston – £200 per night
New York – £211 per night
Atlanta – £125 per night
Mexico City – £65 per night
Miami – £230 per night

Without a doubt, there are more expensive options, as well as cheaper options; however, these are the average prices.

Total Cost

All England fans want their national team to make the final and win the lot. If that is to happen, they must get to the United States, travel between games and buy match-day tickets.

We’ve estimated that this will cost over £7,000.

This price doesn’t include the cost of multiple nights in different accommodations, food, drink, visas or anything else that may incur costs.

The likelihood is that it will be over £10,000 for fans to follow the national team to the final.
