Tottenham Hotspur Make Huge Decision on Ange Postecoglou’s Future
Exclusive Report Initially Breaks Postecoglou News
The Telegraph were the first to break the news of Spurs’ decision to part ways with their manager.
Tottenham were said to have finalised the terms of Postecoglou’s exit this afternoon, after the manager returned from a family holiday in Greece. Staff were also only made aware of Postecoglou’s sacking on the day of the announcement.
Fabrizio Romano was quick off the mark to share the news on his socials: “BREAKING: Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham Hotspur. Decision made by chairman Daniel Levy.”
Tottenham Hotspur Reveal Decision Behind Postecoglou Sacking
In their official statement, Tottenham Hotspur have been transparent about why they sacked Postecoglou.
In summary, it is Spurs’ worst-ever Premier League finish that has cost Postecoglou his job. While the board recognise the huge achievement of winning the Europa League, it isn’t enough to excuse the awful Premier League campaign.
The statement reads: “The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”
Then the club go on to highlight the importance of being able to compete on multiple fronts: “It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond.”
Tottenham have really struggled with injuries and fixture congestion this season. At one point, Postecoglou even admitted that he prioritised the Europa League over the Premier League partly owing to all these challenges.
Interestingly, the official statement does not contain any direct quote from Daniel Levy. Alasdair Gold pointed out that Levy provided a quote for Ryan Mason and Donna-Maria Cullen’s departures, but there is nothing for Postecoglou. This comes as a contrast to the sackings of previous managers including Mauricio Pochettino, where Levy took ownership of his decision.
From 17th to European Champions
Spurs fans were unsure what to expect on Postecoglou’s future after a season of such contrasting emotions. Despite finishing a record low of 17th place in the Premier League, Postecoglou won Tottenham’s first major trophy in 17 years.
Since hearing the announcement, Tottenham fans have taken to X and other platforms to bid their manager farewell. The overwhelming sentiment is that Postecoglou has done something truly significant for the club in winning some silverware. Many fans are up in arms about the decision to sack the manager, even despite the poor league performance. Most fans are surprised at the timing of the sacking and feel that Postecoglou should have been given more time after proving that he can win major titles for Spurs.

Tottenham Look to New Manager
The club have said that a new Head Coach will be announced ‘in due course’.
It will be important to get the new coach on board to prepare the squad for what will be another challenging season, especially with them competing in the Champions League. The first test will come in the Super Cup vs Paris Saint-Germain in August.
Overall, Tottenham have given lots of credit to Postecoglou and his work in laying the foundations for the next manager to come in.
The club signed off with: “We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future – he will always be welcome back at our home.”
