Done Deal: Sunderland Sign International Midfielder

Sunderland have completed the signing of midfielder Salis Abdul Samed from French club RC Lens. The 24-year-old 19-time Ghanian international has signed a season-long loan deal at the Stadium of Light.

The powerful midfielder who featured 27 times in the league as Lens finished seventh in Ligue 1. He also played Champions League football last term starring in victories over Arsenal and Sevilla.

The news was confirmed on safc.com, Sunderland’s official website.

Samed becomes Sunderland’s third signing of deadline day following defender Chris Mepham and young midfielder Milan Aleksic.

Following the completion of the deal to bring the international midfielder to Wearside, Sunderland’s Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We are delighted to welcome Sallis to Sunderland. He’s a defensive midfielder player, who is disciplined in and out of possession. He is a different profile within our midfield, and we believe he will relish the battles that come with playing in a league like the Sky Bet Championship. Sallis’ experiences in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League will stand him in good stead, as we support him in transitioning to English football.”

Who is Salis Abdul Samed?

24-year-old Samed began his career in the Côte d’Ivoire at the JMG Academy before heading to France where he joined Clermont Foot in 2019. He played a starring role as Clermont gained promotion to Ligue 1 and the following season retained their status in the top flight of French football.

Samed moved to RC Lens in 2022 helping the club finish second in Ligue 1 and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. He was named as the best central midfielder by French sports news outlet Get French Football News and was included in their team of the season.
