Tottenham 'Complete Agreement' To Secure Future Rights To 'Breakout USMNT Star'

Tottenham Hotspur have reached “a complete agreement” with Real Betis for a priority option to buy USMNT ‘breakout star’ Johnny Cardoso in the future, with the player agreeing on personal terms. The midfielder is currently playing in La Liga but it is understood that the Premier League club has agreed to a prearranged fixed fee for the player.

Future Deal For Spurs

Italian Reporter Fabrizio Romano has reported that the North London club are close to securing the ‘priority option’ for the 22-year-old. Romano has revealed that should the North London club decide against signing the U.S.A midfielder, they will receive a sell-on clause should he leave Betis.

Tom Bogert reports that the deal is worth around £25 million, with Spurs able to trigger the deal at a time of their choosing.

What Johnny Cardoso Brings To The Pitch

Cardoso started his career at the Brazilian club Internacional before moving to Real Betis for a £5 million fee at the start of 2024. He is a workhorse midfielder who plays a defensive role in the Verdiblancos system.

The US international started 14 games in La Liga last season and impressed with his ability to win the ball. Cardoso averaged 1.94 tackles a game, placing him in the upper echelon of Europe’s elite midfielders in that statistic. The defensive midfielder also intercepted the ball 2.21 times per game.

Cardoso is a raw talent, his area of growth is with his passing. He ranks on the mid to lower end of all passing statistics compared to other midfielders in Europe’s top 5 leagues. If he is to fit into The Spurs system he will need to improve to match the style of play Ange Postecoglou intends to play.

Cardoso is another signing that shows The Spurs plans to build for the future. The North London club previously signed Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The 18-year-old midfielder joined the club for a £8.5 million fee.
