How Germany Women Have Lined Up Recently

Coach Horst Hrubesch has been reluctant to change his starting 11 at all, unless his hand was forced. He did however adjust the tactical shape of the team slightly.

Against Zambia, the team began as follows: Ann-Katrin Berger started in goal. Meanwhile, Giulia Gwinn and Felicitas Rauch took up their positions on the flanks of the back four. Kathrin Hendrich alongside Bibiane Schulze Solano were the central defensive pair.  Janina Minge covered the holding midfield position. Alexandra Popp played in central midfield next to Sjoeke Nüsken, as Jule Brand, Lea Schüller, and Klara Bühl began as the front three.

The only personnel change Hrubesch made was to bring in Schulze Solano for the injured Marina Hegering. Otherwise, the starters were the same as they had been in the previous match. He also changed the 4-2-3-1 formation into a 4-3-3 against Zambia.

Germany Women’s Recent Form and Tactics

Germany recovered well from the 4-1 defeat to the United States, which was far more lopsided than the performance had merited.

Against Zambia, they defended far better, even against the quick and physical front line of their opponents. Meanwhile, despite having scored four times, the Germans were still somewhat careless up front, not making the best of all of their chances. Overall, it was still a major improvement though, as form is good and team morale is high.

Tactically, the change to a 4-3-3 noted above, worked well against Zambia, as the team rotated positions when necessary and created a lot going forward.

Germany Women Injuries to Consider

Sarai Linder dealt with an illness, since just before the game against the United States. She was temporarily replaced in the roster by Rauch. Due to the small squad sizes at the Olympics and the frequent matches in a short timeframe, this can be undone as well.
But as of this writing, the German football federation is not giving updates about Linder’s health. The same is true about the extent of the injuries to Hegering (in the warm-up before the Zambia game) and Hendrich ( during that match) respectively.
