Sunderland Set to Sign ex-Leeds United Winger Ian Poveda

24-year-old Poveda became a free agent this summer after his contract at Leeds expired. Interest was thought to be high in the winger with several Championship clubs interested in signing the winger.

Sunderland Win Race to Sign Winger Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Luton Town were among those interested after he impressed on loan at Wednesday last season. However, it appears to be Sunderland who have won the race.

Poveda follows goalkeeper Simon Moore and midfielder Alan Browne through the door at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland look to improve their squad with Championship experience.

Who is Winger Ian Poveda?

Poveda spent time at various youth academies such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona before joining Manchester City. He would make just one senior appearance under Pep Guardiola in the EFL Cup semi-final in 2019.

In January 2020, the winger made the move to Leeds United, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. He would make just 29 appearances for United and spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday.

Eligible to play for both England and Columbia, Poveda represented the Three Lions at several youth levels; however, in 2023 he was called up to the Columbia national team and has so far made two appearances.

Style of Play

Following his arrival at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this year, Poveda, who can play on either wing or through the middle, described his style of play. He said: “I’m always direct, threatening the opposition, I like to pass the ball forward, create chances, score goals and assists as well. I feel like I’m an exciting player so hopefully they’ll enjoy watching me play.”
