Arsenal are pushing to make their first few signings of the summer transfer window and strengthen their squad before the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season. It seems that they’re close to signing Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori after some promising news on the contract front.

How Much Will Calafiori Earn At Arsenal?
Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Italian international wants to join the Gunners and has sealed an agreement on personal terms. He adds that the 23-year-old defender has agreed on a five year contract with the Premier League heavyweights and that he’ll earn around £3.3 million per year. This would mean he’d be among the lowest-paid players in the senior squad and earn close to what Jakub Kiwior does (reportedly around £3 million).

The journalist also adds that Calafiori is “keen on joining Mikel Arteta” at Arsenal after being impressed by the project that is being built up by the manager. But Romano reiterates that the club-to-club agreement between the North London heavyweights and Bologna is still being negotiated and that there is still no final agreement on the fee. He also hints that Chelsea have abandoned their pursuit of the Italy defender after reportedly agreeing to the signing of FC Basel defender Renato Veiga.
What Can Calafiori Bring to Arsenal?
The signing of a stalwart defender is part of Arsenal’s plans to further strengthen their defensive line even after keeping the most clean sheets (18) in the Premier League last season. Calafiori is being eyed to occupy the left-back role in Arteta’s squad after having shown himself quite capable of thriving in that position for Italy in Euro 2024.

The 23-year-old is naturally a left-sided centre-back but can play in the wide areas with ease. He produced some excellent performances in Euro 2024, including a crucial assist in the 1-1 draw against Croatia that helped Italy move onto the knockout stages. Calafiori has recently been hailed for having an “extraordinary game” in Italy’s win over Albania, which was their only win in the Euros. The Italian defender was one of Bologna’s best players last season, helping them keep 15 clean sheets in 30 Serie A appearances and also delivering seven goal contributions (two goals, five assists).
