Alonso started his managerial career as a youth trainer at Real Madrid before taking charge at Real Sociedad’s B team in 2019. Two years later, he was given the head coach role at Bayer Leverkusen, who were second-bottom in the Bundesliga at the time.

Under Alonso, they ended the 2022/23 campaign in the Bundesliga’s sixth spot, securing a place in the Europa League. However, the best was yet to come for the former Real Madrid midfielder at Bay Arena.
This season, Leverkusen have sent shockwaves across Europe with their incredible performances, staying unbeaten for 43 games so far. On Sunday, the club celebrated their first-ever Bundesliga trophy, ending Bayern Munich’s run of 11 consecutive titles.
Despite being one of the hottest names in all of Europe, Alonso has vowed to stay at the club for at least another season. However, it seems the 42-year-old is already eyeing a future return to Santiago Bernabeu.
Returning to Real Madrid?
Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who have both enjoyed Alonso’s services as a player, are both reported to be closely following the manager’s success at Leverkusen. However, for Fernando Carro there’s only one certain destination for the in-demand manager.

On Monday, the Leverkusen CEO told Cadena Ser (via Fabrizio Romano): “I have no doubts. One day, Xavi Alonso will be Real Madrid’s manager. No doubts at all, zero doubts. The only doubt is when he will sign for Real Madrid.
“But it will happen, trust me. I am sure.”
Chasing the treble
Alonso has already led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title, ending their “Neverkusen” curse. However, the club still have a chance to improve their historic 2023/24 campaign.

They will face Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final on May 25, looking to complete a domestic double. A bigger prize would be to win the Europa League, where Alonso’s men are facing West Ham in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
