Sunderland have today sacked head coach Michael Beale. The news was first confirmed via Sky Sports and BBC Sport. Later, Sunderland’s official website safc.com confirmed the news and also said that Mike Dodds would be the interim coach until the end of the season.
Beale has been in charge since December following the sacking of Tony Mowbray; however, poor results and performances have resulted in his departure after just 12 games.
Sunderland Sack Head Coach After 12 Games
Michael Beale Sacked After 12 Games in Charge
Michael Beale oversaw just 12 games at Sunderland. His record stands at four wins, two draws and seven defeats, including a home defeat in the FA Cup to rivals Newcastle United. Beale has struggled to connect with the fans, players and staff during his time on Wearside and back-to-back away defeats at Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City were the final straw.
Beale Did Not Endear Himself to Those on Wearside
During his brief time at Sunderland, Michael Beale has not covered himself in glory. Following a 1-0 home defeat to Hull City, Beale thought that the fans should get behind the team more, said he was doing “the best he could with the staff he had” and said that he “deserved more respect”.
On Saturday during the 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City, Beale substituted fullback Trai Hume. However, when the defender went to shake his head coach by the hand, he was blanked.
Sunderland Statement
Sunderland’s Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said in a club statement: “We are disappointed that Michael is leaving Sunderland AFC. Our desire is to improve and unfortunately that hasn’t been evident, as such we take full accountability and feel that acting decisively is in the best interests of the Club. This has been a difficult few months for Michael, who leaves with our best wishes for the future. Our focus is now on the players and supporting Mike Dodds in the remaining games to ensure we achieve the highest possible league finish. We will be updating our supporters further as and when significant developments are made.”
