The short-lived quest to find the German National Team’s new head coach is expected to come to an end soon. Julian Nagelsmann, one of the favourites to land the position once Hansi Flick was sacked, has come very close to agreeing with DFB officials on the details of his role. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports this news, giving it his signature “here we go” tagline.

The appointment of Nagelsmann to his new role will come within “the next days,” according to the Italian. Final details over who the young manager will bring in for his staff are yet to be completed, but the issue of contract and salary have been agreed on by the German’s agents.

Nagelmann joins Germany following a horrid run of form that saw them knocked out of the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the group stage. Another embarrassing loss to Japan was enough for the DFB, and they promptly fired Flick to look for another head coach.
Why Nagelsmann?
The young manager has been described as a “generational” coaching talent. Unable to build an impressive playing career due to injuries, he took to managing at a young age. His first job, with Hoffenheim, saw great success when he led them to the Champions League becoming the youngest coach ever to feature in the competition.

From Hoffenheim, he earned a move to RB Leipzig. His continued run of good form caught the eye of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, with whom he signed in 2021. The 2021/22 German top-flight crown was the highlight of his career in Bavaria, which ended when he was released due to off-pitch issues.
With Nagelsmann at the helm, Germany are set to do big things. Unable to reach the knockout stages of the past two World Cups, after winning the 2014 edition in Brazil, the powerful footballing nation looks to rebound when they host the 2024 Euro Tournament.
