‘Primary Midfield Target’: Spurs Player Identified By La Liga Outfit

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

A key member of Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield could be moving to Spain this transfer window. Several sources confirm that Atletico Madrid have identified Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the Madrid club are in talks with the North London outfit to purchase the midfielder.

Tottenham Will Look for Quick Replacement

Atletico have already been busy this transfer window, with the club’s most notable signings being Javi Galan, Caglar Soyuncu, Cesar Azpilicueta and Santiago Mourino so far joining the team this summer.

Coach Diego Simeone has still made it clear that he wants another midfield piece, and Hojbjerg has emerged as his top priority for signings at this current moment. Tottenham would need a big bid from any club looking to acquire the skills of the experienced midfielder.

Should Hojbjerg depart, Tottenham would quickly need to find a player to fill his shoes. It seems, according to Italian journalist and transfer official Rudy Galetti, that Tottenham will approach Barcelona in the hopes of signing Franck Kessie should Hojbjerg be sold out.

Hojbjerg’s Years At Tottenham

If the rumoured deal is completed, Hojbjerg will end a three-year career with Tottenham, and a seven-year career in total spent patrolling a Premier League midfield.

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in 2020 following four years at Southampton. He played in 109 matches for the squad, and the slew of coaches that Tottenham have had in the past three years have all used him as part of their plan for the club.

Will Hojbjerg Start At Atletico?

It would seem a poor move for the 27-year-old Danish international to move to a club where his playing time could be limited, but Atletico have strong depth in their midfield, for the moment.

Hojbjerg normally frequents a right-centre midfield position, one that World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul plays in for Atletico. De Paul has an ageing but equally skilled substitute in Atletico legend Koke, who has worn the club colours since his youth career began 23 years ago.

That would be tough competition for Hojbjerg to contend against, but he might not have to beat them both out. De Paul has been rumoured among some European clubs to be wanting a move away from the Madrid club. This would make the purchase of Hojbjerg a seeming replacement for De Paul. Hojbjerg, who could spend a few years in La Liga, would likely start for Simeone with Koke still acting as a substitute.
