Chelsea, Stamford Bridge General View - Axel Disasi

Chelsea have enquired on the availability of Celta Vigo midfielder and Liverpool target Gabri Veiga in a somewhat “secret” way, confirms Fabrizio Romano. The Blues appear to be intent on bulking up their midfield and finding an ideal partner for their January signing Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea Fighting With Liverpool for Gabri Veiga

Veiga was one of the breakout stars in the 2022/23 La Liga season as he scored 11 goals as well as providing four assists for the Spanish side in 36 league games. His incredible numbers from midfield are now attracting a lot of attention.

Romano states that the London giants are the latest club to secretly ask around about what it would take for them to sign the 23-year-old in the summer window. This includes his release clause, the payment terms, and the possibility of negotiating with Celta about the deal.

He also claims that Liverpool made the same kind of enquiry recently as they also remain in the race to sign the versatile midfielder. Chelsea and their Premier League rivals are both now well informed on the necessary conditions that need to be met to sign the Spaniard – who has a release clause of around £34.2 million, adds Romano.

Veiga has recently spoken out on his future, revealing that what he wants in the immediate future is to play in the U21 Euros, and when asked about his transfer situation, he answered that he only wanted to discuss the present, not the future.

How Can Gabri Veiga Fit In at Stamford Bridge?

The 21-year-old midfielder is a product of the Celta Vigo youth academy and played for three years for their B (reserves) side from 2019-2022 before getting his promotion to the senior team. He only properly broke onto the scene from the beginning of the 2022/23 season and proved himself to be a diamond in the rough for the Spanish club.

Veiga won the La Liga Player of the Month award for his heroics in February, beating out some of La Liga’s most prominent players. Romano himself praised the youngster as an “electric player” on his Here We Go podcast (transcription) earlier this year and seems to be very impressed by him.

The 21-year-old can play anywhere in the midfield but mostly thrives in a no.8 role where he’s given more freedom to roam forward and conduct himself in the final third.
