Reports surfaced in the summer that the French international was deep in negotiations with the Old Trafford club after a fee of around £ 15 million had been agreed between the two clubs. Despite the agreement between the clubs, the midfielder reportedly had hefty wage demands, which led to Manchester United ending their interest. The Rabiot deal falling through was part of a frustrating summer for Erik ten Hag, who also failed to land his top target Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

The Frenchman is disciplined and rarely caught out of position. Rabiot is also adept at playing quick balls to his teammates to go and wreak havoc on the opposition – making him useful in the transition from defence to attack. His quick passing is one of his best assets. The French international uses his upper body strength well to impose himself and disrupt opposition attacks. Rabiot protects the ball well – when under pressure, which allows him to pick out the best option. It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will re-ignite their interest in Rabiot, whose future remains uncertain.
