‘He Was Ten Hag’s No.1 Choice Last Summer’: Manchester United Revive Interest in £400K-A-Week Star

United Face Tough Task to Convince Dutch Star to Leave Barcelona

Erik ten Hag is a big fan of the Dutch midfielder, having worked with him at Ajax in the past. The United manager even praised De Jong before his side’s Europa League knockout clash against Barcelona last month – labelling him as a ‘fantastic player with unique quality’.

Jackson further adds that while the Red Devils have again made the 25-year-old their transfer target for the summer, they could find a deal difficult to execute because the midfielder is currently quite content with his situation at Barcelona. The report also adds that De Jong is currently not seeking a move away from the Spanish giants, but this stance could change once the current season is over.

De Jong was Ten Hag’s no.1 choice for the last summer window, but he refused to be sold by Barcelona and wanted to stay at the club. The Old Trafford boss remains keen on bolstering his midfield in the summer to provide more competition for the influential summer signing Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

De Jong’s Performances for Barcelona This Season

The Dutch midfielder has played a vital role at Barcelona this season, regularly starting games after the World Cup break -where he performed well with the Netherlands. De Jong is also among the highest-paid players at Camp Nou, with a rumoured weekly wage of £400,000 – which was the point of some controversy in his transfer saga last summer.

The 25-year-old midfielder has made 31 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Despite Ten Hag clearly being a fan, it remains to be seen whether he can get his man in the summer.
