Leeds United Miss Out on World Cup ‘Superstar’ Target As Shock Deal Emerges

Target for Leeds United, Azzedine Ounahi, playing for Morocco

A Leeds United Azzedine Ounahi deal is no longer looking likely, as the Moroccan midfielder looks likely to move to Marseille from Angers, according to Fabrizio Romano. The player was described as a “superstar” thanks to his impressive World Cup performances which prompted interest from across Europe, with Serie A leaders Napoli also reportedly considering a move.

What Does the Azzedine Ounahi Deal Look Like?

The Moroccan midfielder’s move away from Angers takes a surprising form after a long transfer saga, with Marseille coming out on top. With a fee of just under £9 million, this move will prompt surprise across Leeds as the Whites were being quoted a significantly higher sum, especially after Napoli’s offer of over £13 million was met with rejection. The player will stay in Ligue 1, moving away from a relegation-threatened club towards one with far more potential for better performances.

Is a Leeds United Weston McKennie Move the Alternative?

Although the two players are somewhat similar, a move for Juventus’ Weston McKennie isn’t quite a like-for-like shift. Victor Orta and his recruitment team are reportedly coming closer to a deal with the American midfielder, but they have very different profiles. Ounahi’s dribbling places him closer to Georginio Rutter in terms of style, with a Leeds United Weston McKennie move pushing the club closer to a passing player with a higher positional IQ.

How Has the Leeds United Transfer Window Been?

Losing out on the Moroccan is sure to be a disappointment, but in general Leeds fans can be happy with this window. Max Wober significantly improves the defence, Georginio Rutter has a lot of potential and securing Weston McKennie will be another Champions League talent bagged for the Yorkshire club. If the rest of the window goes to plan, the club can be incredibly happy with the talent that’s come in through the door.
