How Arsenal Can Win the Premier League

Arsenal players celebrate win

As the first half of the 2022/23 Premier League fixtures are now over, how many more points do table-toppers Arsenal need to win the title? Mikel Arteta’s team has surprised everyone by putting up consistent performances week in and week out this season, claiming the top spot in the table after beating Bournemouth in an away match on August 20, 2022. Since then, the Gunners have firmly held the No. 1 position and are currently the hot favourites to win their 14th English top-division league title.

How Many Points Does Arsenal Need to Win the League?

What Teams Are in the Title Race?

Arsenal are currently in the top spot with 50 points in 19 games, finishing the first half of their season’s fixtures with an inspiring victory over Manchester United at home. They have a five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City with a match in hand. Realistically, the Citizens are in the title race and will challenge the Gunners all the way to the end of the season.

Newcastle United are in third place, and Manchester United are in fourth place; both have 39 points, 11 behind Arsenal. Securing a top-four finish is essential for both teams to earn a place in the Champions League next season. Furthermore, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Chelsea are no longer in the title race and are instead focusing on earning a spot in the 2023/24 UEFA club tournaments.

How Many Points Should Arsenal Aim for in Their Remaining Premier League Fixtures?

The path to winning a league title for the first time in 19 years is very much in their own hands. This is thanks to an impressive start and the inconsistency of the other big-spending teams. Although, Manchester City may be a major barrier to their ambition.

The Citizens had difficulties showcasing their usual level of performance when the league resumed following the 2022 World Cup break. However, Pep Guardiola’s team has put up promising displays in their recent games, hinting that they will perform to the best of their abilities from here on out.

Arteta’s side, on the other hand, shouldn’t take the remainder of the season lightly, despite now enjoying a notable points lead over their nearest rivals. The Gunners will end the season with 100 points and win the league if they earn 50 points in the second half. The only Premier League team to date to finish with 100 points in a season is Manchester City, who achieved that feat in the 2017/18 campaign.

The second-half fixtures of a season are typically more challenging than the first due to the battles for relegation and UEFA’s club competition qualification. Arsenal will therefore face a great deal of difficulty obtaining 50 points from their remaining games. However, this year’s competition may not require that many points to beat out the pack.

The league’s present situation can be traced back to last season, when Liverpool and City fought for the championship right up until the final game. It was the Manchester side who won that race with 93 points. The Reds gave it their all but ultimately had to settle for second place with 92 points.

Arsenal will compete for 57 points in their remaining Premier League matches. If they can get roughly 45 points from there, they will finish the season with 95, which seems sufficient to win the title. It will be extremely tough for Guardiola’s charges to match the league leaders by getting 50 points from their remaining 54, even if they play to the best of their abilities.
