Fabrizio Romano: Green Light Already Given on Another Manchester United Signing

Wout Weghorst

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Burnley striker Wout Weghorst on loan for the rest of the season, claims Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna and Fabrizio Romano. This comes on after United confirmed the signing of backup goalkeeper Jack Butland earlier this week.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new striker after being left short-handed in the position following the untimely departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. As also reported by Laurie Whitwell, United manager Erik ten Hag is believed to like Weghorst’s personality.

United in Advanced Talks Over Weghorst Loan Move

Erik ten Hag has voiced his eagerness to sign a new striker who can fill the role left by Ronaldo a few months ago. While the Manchester side have had an impressive restart to the season, winning all of their games so far, they still have limited options at the centre-forward role and that’s why they reportedly want to sign a natural no.9.

That is why they are pushing to sign Wout Weghorst. As per Santi Aouna, the Red Devils are pressing for the deal to be completed soon and are in advanced talks with Burnley, who loaned out the Dutch international to Turkish side Besiktas for this season. The deal could be finalized when United agree on the loan fee. The Clarets will then have to terminate his loan deal short and then send him out on another short-term move to Old Trafford.

Erik Ten Hag Pleased With Weghorst Chase

Weghorst could prove to be a smart short-term option for the Premier League giants, who are pushing for a title race with games against Arsenal and Manchester City later this month. Ten Hag should be pleased if and when Dutch international arrives after watching him put in some impressive work for his national team at the Qatar World Cup.

The United manager reportedly wants a striker who can dominate the aerial spaces in the final third, which the 6’6″ striker absolutely strives for. Wout Weghorst has scored eight goals in 17 appearances for Besiktas this season.

However, his most memorable contribution was in the World Cup quarter-finals for the Netherlands, as he scored a brace after coming off the bench against Argentina and even got into a disagreement with Lionel Messi – who called him a ‘fool’ at the post-match interview. Not only can Weghorst add goals to the Red Devils, but also has some personality from the bench, which they absolutely need to compete on all fronts until May.
