Luke Shaw has impressed in central defence recently, playing next to Raphael Varane in the last two matches against relegation contenders Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest. With the emergence of Shaw as another option in the centre of the defence for Ten Hag, Maguire’s position in the pecking order may just have taken another step down. It is true that he and his compatriot offer two completely different skillsets at centre-back – Maguire being a powerful aerial presence and a progressive passer while Shaw provides more pace and agility – but this newfound competition for Maguire will likely further limit his playing time at Old Trafford.
