Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea Suffer Blow as Barcelona Close to Signing ‘Incredible Player’ and Bolster Squad

Barcelona are now very close to signing Marcos Alonso from Chelsea, reports Fabrizio Romano. With the Blues set to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, the Spanish giants are now confident of their ability to land the experienced left-back.

Thomas Tuchel’s Must Green Light Alonso Sale

The only thing that is keeping the deal from being completed is approval from Thomas Tuchel. Once the London side’s boss gives the green light to issue the sale, it is likely to be done quickly. Barcelona have already agreed personal terms with the Spaniard and Romano also adds that the deal is ‘really close’.

It has also been accelerated with Chelsea reportedly agreeing on a deal with Brighton to sign Cucurella, incidentally an ex-Barcelona player himself. With his acquisition, the Blues would not need someone like Alonso anymore as the new left-back will compete with England international Ben Chilwell for that position.

Barcelona’s Summer Transfer Tussle With Chelsea Summarized

Barcelona have had a brilliant summer transfer window so far, despite reportedly being over £1 billion in net debt. They’ve been able to ‘activate levers‘ – basically selling off parts of the club to get immediate revenue and allowing them to fix their financial troubles.

Xavi’s team have been a thorn at the side of Chelsea all through the summer window. They managed to convince Ousmane Dembele to re-sign with them, with the Frenchman rejecting a possible move to Stamford Bridge. The Blues were also close to an agreement to sign Raphinha from Leeds United, only for the Blaugrana to swoop in and sign him.

Most recently, Barcelona also managed to convince Jules Kounde to join them and reject a move to the Premier League side – who were really interested in him. Along with these, the La Liga giants have also signed Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich as well as ex-Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and ex-AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie on free transfers.

They’ve already spent over £130 million on transfers, which will only be increased with Alonso’s acquisition. But in the 31-year-old left-back, they get a really talented player, who was dubbed as ‘incredible’ by former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp last season. Alonso has made 211 appearances for Chelsea, having 52 goal contributions (29 goals, 23 assists) and should be a solid acquisition for Barcelona.
