U17 Euro Winner

Ian Maatsen is set to join Burnley on a loan spell spanning a season, pending some paperwork. Maatsen has plenty of experience when it comes to these types of transfers, having previously been loaned out to Charlton Athletic and Coventry City respectively. Burnley will be another great learning experience for the 20-year-old.

Vincent Kompany, Burnley’s newly appointed manager, is said to want Maatsen as a left-back. This makes perfect sense as it’s the Dutchman’s primary position. Additionally, he featured in the Netherlands squad that won the U17 Euros of 2019.

Leading up to this, Maatsen played for a wide variety of big Dutch clubs: Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. In 2018, his first stint outside the Netherlands saw him join Chelsea. So far, the 20-year-old’s sole appearance for the club was in the League Cup.

The State of Burnley

Burnley are in an awkward position, having just been relegated from the Premier League after being there since 2016. They will be hoping to get back in the top flight with Vincent Kompany at the helm and through signings such as Ian Maatsen, even though it is just a loan deal.

Still, Burnley’s current era in the 21st century has been the club’s best since the late 60s and early 70s. For Example, in the 1980s, the Clarets were in the fourth division of English football. So in comparison, Burnley’s yo-yo-ing between the Championship and Premier League is better than life at the bottom of the EFL.
