Tottenham Hotspur have revealed the price of Giovani Lo Celso, should the player depart this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club want around £17 million (or the equivalent of 20 million euros) for the player.

The midfielder is currently on loan at Villarreal and this price tag is set in the knowledge that the Spanish outfit are very keen to sign him permanently.

When Spurs brought in the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, there was a lot of buzz amongst the Spurs faithful. But that promise didn’t quite come to fruition for a few reasons.

Part of the problem is the maelstrom of managers and their ideas and preferred personnel. During Lo Celso’s time at Spurs, the club have axed Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and have since brought in Antonio Conte. Lo Celso never really got himself into a regular first team place which is why he’s out on loan in Spain in the first place.

Now Spurs have introduced Rodrigo Bentancur who works well with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in midfield while relying on the likes of Dejan Kulusevski to add extra flair and creative play.

It’s hard to figure where a player like Lo Celso would fit in this Tottenham team. He perhaps could play in a wide playmaking role. Or he might have to sit deeper and be prepared to get through more grunt work that Bentancur and Hojbjerg perform.

If Spurs do let him go in the summer, this 20 million euro fee does mark a slight drop to his original fee (around £27 million). With Conte plotting to make more moves in the transfer market, Lo Celso does not seem to have a place in this Spurs side. So shipping him out is still a wise move, with Lo Celso’s transfer fee relieving some of Tottenham’s summer transfer activity.

Spurs Career in Numbers: What Does Lo Celso Bring to the Table?

Lo Celso has played more senior matches at Tottenham Hotspur than any other club (84). During his time so far at the Lilywhites he has scored eight goals and notched six assists. This is hardly a world-breaking return. But comparing Lo Celso to say Kulusevski would be unfair. While Lo Celso is a creative, forward-minded player, he still often plays much deeper and has to drive forwards. Numbers aside he has a killer pass in him, the tenacity to win balls back and he is left-footed which is always an added bonus.

But it all still comes down to the manager’s final say. Conte has met with the board and has made his demands clear. It’s easy to talk about the positives that a player like Lo Celso can bring to a side but the truth of the matter is that he’s out on loan at Villareal having failed to really impress at Spurs.
