Tottenham Hotspur Set to Make Cristian Romero Transfer Permanent

Cristian Romero

Tottenham Hotspur will activate the £40 million obligation to buy clause in the loan agreement to keep central defender Cristian Romero at the club, according to Fabrizio Romano

Romero has reportedly agreed terms with the North London club in a deal that will keep him there until 2026.

Cristian Romero to Join Tottenham Hotspur Permanently for £40 million

Antonio Conte’s Key Man

Romero joined Spurs on loan from Serie A side, Atalanta, before the start of the 2021/22 season and has gone on to make 30 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The Argentina international appears to be a favourite of manager Antonio Conte at the centre-back position and has helped the club secure Champions League football for the 2022/23 season.

Romero emerged as one of the better centre-backs in the premier league last season, ranking in the 99th percentile in tackles, 97th percentile in pressures, 94th percentile in blocks, as well as 90th percentile in interceptions. However, the 24-year-old struggled with injuries at times this season, limiting him to only 22 appearances in the Premier League.

Could More Players Follow?

The signing marks the first piece of business for Conte and Director of Football Fabio Paratici since securing Champions League football next season.

Winger Dejan Kulusevski was brought in on an 18-month loan deal from Juventus during the January transfer window, keeping him at the club until the end of next season. However, the deal reportedly contains an obligation to buy clause that could see Spurs pay around £29 million should certain criteria be met.

Spurs fans will no doubt be hoping that the deal is made permanent as the 22-year-old has shone in his brief time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, scoring five goals and adding eight assists in 18 Premier League appearances this season.

With Champions League football secured, there’s no doubt that there could be a busy summer ahead for Conte and Paratici.
