Manchester City Legend Vincent Kompany in Running for Premier League Job

City Legend Vincent Kompany

Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany is in contention to take the managerial role at Burnley, according to Mike McGrath and Daniel Zeqiri, of the Telegraph.

The former City captain has been in charge at Anderlecht in Belgium since August 2020. He had been player-manager before that but decided it was best to step down from managerial duties until he eventually retired from playing.

Return to Premier League Likely Inevitable

Vincent Kompany certainly made his mark in the Premier League as a player, winning four league titles with City and becoming their most influential captain under the City Football Group ownership.

It would be no surprise if Kompany also had the desire to make his mark on the league as a manager.

With Burnley recently having dismissed Sean Dyche, there is a vacancy that could interest Kompany.

How It’s Going at Anderlecht

Since taking over at the club he left to join City, Kompany has guided them to consecutive third-place finishes in the 2020/21  and 2021/22 editions of the Belgian Pro League.

Anderlecht are the most successful club in Belgium, lifting the league title 34 times and being runner-up on 21 occasions. However, they haven’t held the league title since 2017 and Kompany has been tasked with guiding them back toward those great days.

Clearly, Kompany is still young in his managerial career and has plenty of time to land a blow but the Premier League is almost universally seen as the top league in Europe and for a man that won it as much as he did, the temptation may be too much to resist should an offer come his way.

There are likely other candidates though, with the betting odds previously suggesting Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder and Derby County manager Wayne Rooney were among the favourites for the vacancy.

Kompany, alongside Rooney, was recently inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.
