Ji So-Yun Set to Leave Chelsea This Summer

Ji So-Yun

Chelsea Women have announced that veteran midfielder Ji So-Yun will leave the club at the end of the season to return to her native South Korea.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was quick to heap praise on Ji So-Yun when the news was announced, telling the club website: “What an honour and a privilege it’s been to coach one of the most amazing players the WSL has ever seen. There’s no question she’s been the most successful player from outside our league.

“Ji’s helped the club grow on and off the pitch and she’s a fabulous character who will be sorely missed. I will miss her terribly and I’m so grateful for everything she’s done for everyone at the football club. We are in a much better place because of it”

Club Legend

Since joining the club Ji has been an important part of Chelsea’s success, winning an impressive total of eleven major trophies in her time at the club. In her 208 appearances for Chelsea, she has scored 68 goals and set up many more, often providing an impressive attacking spark to the team.

Still Important

This news comes as a shock as Ji So-Yun is still an important part of Chelsea’s side. With Melanie Leupolz sidelined for much of this season with long covid and currently absent through pregnancy, Ji has been one of the first names on the team sheet occupying the central midfield spot. Whether tasked with sitting deep and killing defenses with her passing or pushing up the field to aid the striking power of Sam Kerr, Ji So-Yun has performed admirably when called on.

Chelsea will face a tough task as they aim to replace the veteran midfielder for next season while also facing the proposition of reintegrating Melanie Leupolz into the team following an extended layoff. In addition to club hero Ji So-Yun departing this summer, former stalwart Jonna Andersson is set to return home as the Chelsea Women’s team enters a new era.
