Manchester United play their last home game of the season tonight against Brentford. It has been an extremely disappointing campaign for the Red Devils. After yesterday’s results, United sit six points behind Spurs in fifth and eight off Arsenal in fourth having played an extra game, all but confirming they won’t be in the Champions League next season. All eyes are now looking ahead to next season, with a major restructuring going on behind the scenes, though a key Manchester United staff member won’t be replaced!
News broke last week that Matt Judge, Manchester United’s main transfer negotiator and former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward’s right-hand man, will be leaving the club this summer. It immediately speculated rumours that the Red Devils could make a move for Paul Mitchell, Monaco’s highly-rated sporting director. However, BBC Sport report Manchester United have no immediate plans to appoint a like-for-like replacement for Matt Judge.
No Plans to Appoint Replacement for Key Manchester United Staff Member
John Murtough to Lead Recruitment
Matt Judge is serving his notice period but will not be involved with the transfers this summer, as he had been since 2014. Instead, current football director, John Murtough will take leadership on Manchester United’s recruitment, assisted by technical director Darren Fletcher. It is going to be a busy summer at the Manchester club, with current interim manager and future consultant Ralf Rangnick saying three of four players won’t be enough. Manchester United fans hope that new manager Erik ten Hag will have a say on signings that suit his dynamic and offensive playing style.
Matt Judge’s Time at United Assessed
Matt Judge has overseen transfers since the summer of 2014. During this time, Manchester United’s transfer business has been awful. Overspending for underperforming talent has meant United have not won a trophy since 2017, and only three in total since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Harry Maguire for £80 million, Paul Pogba for £89 million, Lukaku for £75 million, Fred for £52 million and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for £50 million, just to name a few, have not lived up to their price tag.
John Murtough, Darren Fletcher and Erik Ten Hag have a huge job this summer. Clubs know that United need players and will typically push for larger fees.
