Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are two key figures in the AC Milan attack. At 35 and 40-years-old respectively, despite ageing like fine wines, the pair are nearing the end of their careers. This calls for reinvigoration in the final third and the Italian side are turning their attention to the Premier League. As per Santi Aouna, Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez is the subject of a lot of interest from the Milan hierarchy.

Having delivered that delightful assist for the opener in their Champions League tie against Real Madrid, Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez is on the radar of an Italian giant. In the words of La Gazzetta dello Sport, “the dream of Milan is Riyad Mahrez.” The Algerian is now 31 and is yet still playing at the top of his game under Pep Guardiola. Alongside Kevin De Bruyne, the man who nodded home his cross against Los Blancos, Mahrez leads the team with 11 league goals this term.

On that note, would the Manchester City forward really make the move? He is currently playing under one of the best ever managers for one of the best teams about, not to mention earning a pretty penny whilst doing so. Milan may well clinch the Scudetto this year, so they’re not an unattractive proposition in fairness. If Mahrez were to become surplus to requirements at the Etihad like we saw with Ferran Torres, for example, then this move would start to become all the more logical.
What Would This Mean for Both Clubs?
Starting first with the potential destination and as a city and a club, Milan is certainly enticing. Mahrez would fit in alongside names such as Ante Rebic, Brahim Diaz and Rafael Leao upfront. None of which are recognised strikers as such, but Leao has played there before and the club could equally seek an heir to the Giroud/Ibrahimovic throne. It would be an exciting frontline there is no doubt about that and none of the aforementioned trio tend to operate off of the right like the Manchester City forward does.
Talking of Manchester City and it begs the question of how they would cope post-Mahrez. The rumours are pointing towards Gabriel Jesus departing the club with Arsenal being the most likely destination for the Brazilian. This would leave behind an ageing Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish on top of the imminent arrival of Erling Haaland. If the Norwegian wonderkid is to make the move to the blue half of Manchester, then the club would be in safe hands. Foden is perfectly capable of playing off of the right-hand side after all
Riyad Mahrez is still a key part of the Manchester City forward line and it would come as a shock if Pep were to move him on. That being said, Milan are building something special and you never know with City. Cutthroat decisions have been in their MO in the past.
