Manchester United have triggered their option to extend the contract of Birmingham loanee Tahith Chong by 12 months, according to Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst.

The Dutch talent recently returned from injury in his loan at Birmingham City and has scored one goal in five appearances since. Before his injury, he provided three assists in 13 games for the Blues.

Highly-Rated

Tahith Chong has always been among the most highly-rated talents in the Manchester United academy, however, was caught needing some experience out on loan a few seasons ago. He eventually got his move to Werder Bremen, which didn’t go to plan and was cut short, switching destinations mid-season to Club Brugge in Belgium. He didn’t play regularly enough but was part of a league-winning side.

Now, at Birmingham City, Chong seems to have found a place where he can thrive a little more. Under Lee Bowyer’s guidance, he appears to have regained some form and with that earned a bit of popularity with the Blues fans.

United have taken the decision to extend his current contract, which was due to expire in the summer, by 12 months, as was their option to do so.

It means the 22-year-old, who has missed much of this season with a groin problem, will get another chance to impress – be it at the club or away on loan again.

Perhaps the potential appointment of fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag, who has reportedly become the leading candidate to be the next Manchester United manager, could breathe new life into Chong’s Manchester United career.

The Red Devils signed Chong from Feyenoord as a youngster back in 2016. He made his debut in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Reading in 2019.
