Club Initiated Contact
In January, it seemed that Barcelona and Dembele would be parting ways after the club publicly tried to oust the 24-year-old winger after a pay cut was at the centre of the disagreement between the two parties. Now, the Catalan club have contacted the players’ representatives, Moussa Sissoko and Marco Lichtsteiner, and a turnaround is on the cards.
Significant Turnaround
Barcelona signed Ferran Torres from Manchester City in January and Chelsea had been rumoured to be considering a bid for the player before his current contract expires on June 30, but despite the contract stalemate, the player remained with the Catalan giants. This change in fortunes has been replicated on the pitch with Barca boss Xavi giving Dembele plenty of playing time resulting in him having the best assists per minute ratio in Europe’s top five leagues.
Demands
For any deal to be completed, there will need to be a change in the demands of Dembele’s agents as Barcelona remain in financial turmoil and must stay within the La Liga salary cap – issues that led to them having to part ways with superstar Lionel Messi.
Dembele and his team have been asking for high wages and also wanting a new signing on fee but that sort of financial outlay is out of Barcelona’s capabilities. Barcelona would still want a pay cut to be accepted and although the new talks will be seen as a positive sign it remains to be seen whether the demand of all sides can be met to such a point that a new deal can be signed, sealed and delivered.
