Over Three Years as Manager in Third Spell

Darren Ferguson has always been a safe bet for Peterborough United. Having appointed him on three occasions, their trust in his ability to do a job is clear. Ferguson has backed that up too with four promotions at the club, most recently as League One runners-up in 2020/21.

He has five promotions from League One and Two combined on his CV with Doncaster Rovers the other Football League club adding to that – he guided them to third place in League Two in 2017 – an immediate bounce back to League One.

Ferguson has struggled to maintain any sort of form with The Posh this season, only Barnsley have won fewer games than them in the Championship. Peterborough sit 23rd in the league and will now look in a new direction following Ferguson’s resignation.

The 21 points they have collected so far is matching that of Derby County even after the Midlands-based club’s points deductions.

Highly-Regarded at Club

Speaking after Ferguson’s exit, Peterborough United co-owner Darragh MacAnthony told theposh.com: “Myself and my two partners regard Darren as one of the greatest managers of this football club, most certainly in the modern era. The success we have enjoyed with him at the helm has been unrivaled and he will always be described as a legend by myself and my partners.

“I want to personally thank him for all his hard work on behalf of the club, particularly in his third spell when he dealt with the unquestionable frustration at the season being cut-short due to Covid-19 and then responding by securing promotion the following season against all the odds.

“The financial constraints he had to work under due to the impact of no supporters inside the stadium was something that nobody could have foreseen, and he dealt with that in such an admirable and methodical way. He created a working environment that the players enjoyed despite the restrictions and he deserves enormous credit for that and the success we enjoyed.”

The club statement went on to wish Ferguson “and his wonderful family nothing but the best for the future.”

No replacement – temporary or permanent – has yet been announced yet. The club face a difficult trip to Championship leaders Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Ferguson’s final game in charge saw them lose 1-0 to Wayne Rooney’s Derby County, conceding a late winner. Both teams finished the match with 10-men.

The son of Sir Alex, Darren Ferguson’s proven ability to take a team up from the third and fourth tier of English football will see him remain a viable candidate for many Football League clubs should they need to appoint a new boss.
