The week may have ended with an emphatic win in League One but Oxford United fans were also dealt a blow of the passing of a former great.
Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: 4-0 Win Against Charlton Before Passing of U’s Legend
U’s Hit Six in Behind Closed Doors Friendly
January signing Marcus Browne was on the scoresheet on his first appearance since returning to the club as Oxford United beat a Cardiff City U23 side 6-1 in a behind closed doors friendly match.
Sam Baldock netted his first goal since joining the club earlier this month after just ten minutes before Sam Winnall added a second shortly after.
Youngster Ben Davis, who assisted Baldock, also scored his first Oxford goal before Browne added a fourth with seven minutes of the first half remaining.
The former Middlesbrough man also struck the woodwork and saw an effort tipped wide before his strike, but was dismissed before the break after retaliating against a couple of fierce challenges.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Winnall added a fifth goal before halftime before Baldock struck his second of the afternoon.
Cardiff did score once in the second half but the result was beyond doubt as Oxford brought on Gatlin O’Donkor, Slavi Spasov, Tyler Goodrham, Josh Anifowose and Yoav Sade in place of Baldock, Winnall, Oisin Smyth (who was also making his first appearance), Davis and John Mousinho respectively.
Oxford Smash the Addicks
Oxford returned to winning ways with a comfortable 4-0 victory on the road at Charlton Athletic.
Karl Robinson’s side suffered two defeats last week but bounced back with a sensational display at the Valley.
Top-scorer Matty Taylor netted a brace before the half-hour mark before Baldock opened his account on his first start for the club.
Former Oxford defender Sean Clare was then sent off for the hosts before Cameron Brannagan netted another long-range effort to secure the win.
The three points move the U’s up to fourth in League One, four points behind MK Dons.
Oxford United Legend Passes Away
Following the win at Charlton, news quickly emerged of the passing of former U’s winger Joey Beauchamp, at the age of 50.
The Oxford-born midfielder joined his hometown club in 1987 and was a key figure for the U’s in the early 90s.
However, with the club struggling financially, he was sold to West Ham United for £1 million but famously lasted just 58 days.
He moved to rivals Swindon Town before returning to Oxford shortly after before seeing out his career with the club.
A wizard of a winger, Beauchamp is currently tenth in the club’s appearance list with 428 and fifth in the goalscoring charts with 80.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
