Markanday Leaves Spurs After Nine Years
Joining Spurs at the age of 11, a decision to leave the club would no doubt have been difficult. Markanday has prioritised his career with a move where regular first-team football is much more likely.
Markanday had just months remaining on his deal at Tottenham after signing a one-year extension in January 2021. He has now left the club, hoping to hit new heights with promotion-chasing Blackburn Rovers.
Rovers are third in the Championship table and being just two points off top have a very realistic chance of finally returning to the Premier League. Markanday’s signing may help their cause.
Blackburn have reportedly paid an initial £500,000 fee for their new number 18.
Markanday made one senior appearance for Tottenham, as a substitute v Vitesse in the Europa Conference League, becoming the first British Asian to represent Spurs.
He has shown significant potential, scoring 12 and assisting five in 14 Premier League 2 appearances this season, he has also assisted twice in three Papa John’s Trophy games for Tottenham Hotspur U21.
Tony Mowbray: Dilan Markanday a Signing Rovers Fans Will Love
Tony Mowbray has been Blackburn Rovers boss since 2017, which is an achievement in this day and age.
I’m very excited to be joining @rovers, a great club with so much history that I’m delighted to now be a part of. Can’t wait to get started! 🔵⚪️ pic.twitter.com/h58nvwAszh

Mowbray told RoversTV on his new signing: “He’s got quick feet, sharpness, he has goals in him and he’s a young player that wants to find the back of the net.
“He’s been at a big football club and probably hasn’t seen the pathway through to their first team. It’s an opportunity for us and we’ve put a lot of work in watching him and assessing him.
“I want him to work his way into the group, to get to know his teammates, and we’re hopeful that he might come in and hit the ground running.”
Blackburn have scored 44 goals in the Championship this season, beaten only by Fulham’s 64. If Markanday can add anything to that impressive tally, then they will have high hopes of going up.
