Chelsea Women’s team will have to wait a small bit longer to get their 2022 underway as it has been announced that their WSL game with Everton is postponed. The club released a brief statement to confirm the news: “Our Barclays FA Women’s Super League away fixture against Everton, scheduled for this Sunday 16 January, has been postponed. The decision was agreed between both teams and the FA following a number of positive Covid-19 test results and injuries at Everton.”
Chelsea Women v Everton Women Postponed
Chelsea Left Waiting
This news comes as a blow to Chelsea who were hoping to finally get their 2022 underway after their first game of the year against Tottenham also had to be postponed. Emma Hayes and her side were probably hoping to get their heads down and resume their WSL campaign after finding themselves knocked out of the Champions League group stage following a 4-0 defeat on matchday six.
The team have since signed Alsu Abdullina and are making a go of it to retain the WSL despite finding themselves trailing Arsenal already, although the Gunners dropped points at Birmingham to open the door for Chelsea. Chelsea have a quick turnaround at least as they play West Ham on January 19 in the WSL Cup Quarter Final. Based on both clubs’ statements the Everton postponement has more to do with Everton missing players than Chelsea so it would appear that the Blues will have enough players available to compete against West Ham.
Everton Crisis
Everton also had their first game of 2022 canceled when their trip to Aston Villa was postponed, due to a mix of injuries and COVID-19 cases the club is currently unable to field a full matchday squad according to their statement. Everton has until January 23 when they take on West Ham to get some players back and get their season back underway.
