Ferran Torres has officially completed his move to Barcelona from Manchester City for a fee of £46 million, which could rise to £50 million with add-ons. The transfer is Xavi’s first in the Nou Camp dugout, and shows that, no matter what, Barcelona are still capable of attracting star players. The forward has signed a contract until 2027.
Ferran Torres Completes Barcelona Move
From Dispensable at Manchester City to Invaluable at Barcelona
At Manchester City, Ferran Torres was one of many stars. You took him out, and another player of equal talent stepped in. At Barcelona, however, Torres will be the main man; he arrives a poster boy for the present and future of the club with the chance to become a hero. And that idea would have attracted him.
In a way, the transfer is very similar to Leroy Sane’s to Bayern Munich in 2019. Many were shocked by it, and believed that Sane was one of the best players at Manchester City and very much part of Pep Guardiola’s plans. Like Torres, however, Sane’s talent was almost swallowed up by the amount of ability around him, and he was never able to stand out. At Bayern, his ability couldn’t be clearer than it is right now. And Torres will hope to replicate that rise.
If Torres can take Barcelona into the Champions League places this season, then he’ll be an instant hit with what are incredibly hard to please fans. Such is the magnitude of the situation at Barcelona, the forward may have to ride the ongoing storm before he can truly appreciate playing for such a big club.
He will know the chaos that he has entered. But, he will also be aware that the future can be bright if he hits the ground running alongside the likes of Ansu Fati and Pedri. One thing that is clear with the transfer, is that Xavi is building for the future.
