According to Gianluca di Marzio, AC Milan had a positive meeting with football agent Mino Raiola regarding the contract renewal of centre-back, Alessio Romagnoli. The Italian defender’s contract expires in June 2022. Terms and conditions must still be discussed, but the positive signs show the interest to renew from both parties.

Positive Signs Regarding Contract Renewal of Alessio Romagnoli

A Storied Past at the Club

Romagnoli is the longest-serving player at the club, having been there since 2015. In addition, he’s still only 26-years-old. Considering he’s in the prime of his career, extending his contract only makes sense.

With that being said, Romagnoli lost his place in the team’s starting line-up. This, however, isn’t due to poor form. Fikayo Tomori is playing outstanding football. He’s all over the pitch at all times and a nightmare for opposing forwards. Tomori is playing like the top centre-back in Serie A. Then, of course, there’s Simon Kjaer. The Dane is a massive presence in the back and continues to exhibit strong play and leadership. He’s a necessity for a very young back-line.

Romagnoli is the top option off the bench and a great one at that. He’s shined for both Milan and the Italian national team in the past, and of course has plenty left remaining in the tank.

He also serves as Milan’s captain. Perhaps not on the pitch, but he remains a major leader to the squad. His loyalty is second to none. Romagnoli had been approached by other teams in the past, especially while Milan were struggling, but he turned them down.

Romagnoli deserves to be awarded for his loyalty and leadership. More than that, he remains a strong player to have. He turns 27 in a couple of months, meaning a three or four-year extension is likely ideal for both sides.
