Birmingham City Agree Mutual Termination of Adam Clayton’s Contract

Birmingham City

Birmingham City have confirmed the mutual termination of Adam Clayton’s contract at the club.

The 32-year-old midfielder joined The Blues in September 2020 when the club was led by his former manager at Middlesbrough, Aitor Karanka.

Adam Clayton’s Birmingham City Contract Mutually Terminated

Championship Experience Unused by Lee Bowyer at St. Andrew’s

Adam Clayton is a midfielder with over 300 Championship games to his name. He spent the most part of his career with Middlesbrough before eventually following manager Aitor Karanka to Birmingham City.

He is yet to feature for Birmingham this season and has never made a Championship appearance under Lee Bowyer, who took over earlier in the year.

Bowyer made it clear that Clayton was not part of his plans in September 2021, in press conference quotes cited by Birmingham Live, he said: “With Adam Clayton I had a private discussion with him at the end of the season. I was honest with him and told him the situation and he has not been training with us, But he didn’t move club.”

Asked why he had been included in the 25-man squad registered with the EFL, Bowyer had said: “We don’t have 25 players to put on the squad, so we put his name on the squad. He is here – and his name is on the squad but we had a discussion, it was private.”

“He had the opportunity to move but he didn’t go so he is still here.”

Mutual Termination Best for All Parties Given Situation

The mutual termination allows the midfielder to go out and find a club where his experience may be appreciated.

Birmingham City said in a statement on bcfc.com: “The club has reached an agreement with Adam Clayton to mutually terminate his contract.”

“The 32-year-old joined Blues on an initial two-year deal last summer and went on to make 16 appearances in all competitions during the 2020/21 season.

“Despite the midfielder having a period of time remaining on his existing contract, both parties have agreed to conclude his time at the club effective immediately.

“Blues would like to wish Adam all the best in his future career.”

Birmingham are 13th in the Championship, 11 points clear of the bottom three and three points below the play-off places.

A blow was dealt to them in midweek with the news that Tahith Chong, who had been in good form, was to return to Manchester United following surgery.

The Blues host Reading on Saturday, November 6.
