Claudio Ranieri has recently taken the reins at Vicarage Road following the sacking of Xisco Munoz. The Italian has already made his first signing at the helm, with free-agent Nicolas Nkoulou joining on a free transfer. However, as the transfer window is closed, Ranieri will have to wait until January to truly shuffle pieces to get the players he most needs (if the board is willing to back him, of course). Morten Thorsby is one name Watford were linked with in the past summer. Now, the Hornets have an extra incentive – and connections – to completing the transfer.
Watford Could Reignite Morten Thorsby Interest
Watford Already Had Interest in Morten Thorsby
In the recent summer transfer window, Watford’s desire for a midfield reshuffle was no secret. One name frequently linked with a move to Watford was the high-pressing Thorsby. The rumours surrounding a move for the Sampdoria midfielder were frequent, though the Italian club grew hard to negotiate with, so the Hornets turned their attention elsewhere.
Ranieri Could Be Key for Transfer
Thorsby’s intense work rate and tremendous pressing success over the past couple of seasons is no coincidence. The midfielder’s manager for the past two campaigns has been none other than Ranieri himself. If the Watford board is to truly back the style of play Ranieri will want to impose, then bringing in a midfielder such as Thorsby – if the current choices at Vicarage Road cannot sufficiently prove themselves – is imperative for making Ranieri’s tactics effective.
As talks between the clubs about the player may have already reached deep stages this past summer, adding in Thorsby’s former manager – who both the player and the club have a good relationship with – could be enough to push a potential transfer over the line.
Ranieri Admits Serie A Signings in January Are a Possibility
When speaking with Radio Anch’io Sport, Ranieri said, “Buying players from Serie A? Why not…we signed Nkoulou, a former Torino player, which we needed a lot.”
A lot of pieces would have to move for a Thorsby transfer to England to occur. However, if the transfer does eventually happen, it would not at all be a surprise considering all of the factors.
