Free Agent Sergio Romero Set for Venezia Move

Free Agent Sergio Romero

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that former Manchester United goalkeeper and now free agent Sergio Romero is set to join Italian side Venezia with a deal already said to be in the final stages. Spezia also hold an interest in the Argentine shot-stopper, though Venezia look to have won this race.

Free Agent Sergio Romero Set For Italian Return

Venezia Transfer in Final Stages

Venezia will be gaining a keeper who has won the Europa League and played at the highest level for his country Argentina in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments. The deal will see Romero join on a free transfer following a dismal final year at Old Trafford that saw him excluded from the squad.

Spezia Interest

Football Italia reports that Spezia were interested in Romero’s signature but they instead opted to sign the former Roma keeper Antonio Mirante who was also available on a free transfer leaving the path open for the newly promoted Serie A side Venezia to get their man.

Six Years at Manchester United

Romero played for United for six years and finally left the club when his contract expired at the end of the 2020/21 Premier League season leaving him free to join another club on a free transfer but it has taken some time for him to finally find a new club. It was thought he would easily find pastures new but it has proved difficult and the player will be relieved to finally have some closure on his departure from the Theatre of Dreams.

Romero did not feature at all for United last season and found himself pushed out by David de Gea and Dean Henderson with Lee Grant operating as third-choice for Solskjaer and it became clear Romero’s services were no longer required.

New Start for Free Agent Sergio Romero

Now that the three-month search for a new club is coming to an end, Romero can start again with Venezia who have brought him in to strengthen their options with usual number one Luca Lezzerini still out through injury.
