Chelsea have announced the temporary departure of Wales international Ethan Ampadu. The versatile defender has completed a season-long loan move to Serie A new boys Venezia.

He will link up with Paulo Zanetti’s team as they battle to avoid an instant return to Serie B.

As well as confirming his loan move, Chelsea have also officially announced that Ampadu has extended his contract by a further year. He is now tied down to the Champions League holders until 2024.

Ethan Ampadu Completes Loan Move to Venezia

Ampadu Agrees Chelsea Contract Extension

The Welshman is no stranger to a temporary departure from Stamford Bridge. Ampadu is gearing up for his third loan away from Chelsea as he targets game time and continuation of his development.

A loan to RB Leipzig didn’t work out two seasons ago but a move to Sheffield United last campaign was productive for the talented 20-year-old. Despite the Blades’ relegation from the Premier League, Ampadu impressed with a string of consistent performances in their back three as well as the number six role.

Despite his limited number of appearances at Chelsea, Ampadu has established himself as a Welsh international. He has become a key player under Rob Page, starting all three of Wales’ European Championship group games. Preferred in midfield by his international manager, the youngster could slot into the Venezia central midfield if required.

This will be a new culture, a new league, and a new opportunity for Ampadu. He joins a Venezia side who have made some positive moves in the transfer window as they look to assert themselves in the top flight of Italian football. Survival is their primary objective and Ampadu is no stranger to this situation.

His versatility means Zanetti has plenty of areas covered. The Welshman offers pace, a good reading of the game, and raw talent. Chelsea will be confident in their young talent getting the game time he needs in Italy. It’s certainly a move that suits all parties.
